Calculator

Formula Used

The calculator first converts weight to kilograms. It then estimates resting energy requirement.

RER = 70 × body weight in kg0.75

Daily energy need is found by multiplying RER by life stage, activity, body condition, and goal factors.

Daily energy = RER × stage factor × activity factor × condition factor × goal factor

Treat calories are removed from the feeding allowance. The chosen wet food share is then applied.

Wet food grams = wet food calories ÷ calories per gram

Wet Dog Food Feeding Guide

Why Wet Food Portions Matter

Wet dog food is rich in moisture. It can support hydration and appetite. Yet portion control still matters every day. A full can may look small. It may still carry many calories. This calculator helps turn label calories into practical feeding amounts.

Start With Energy Needs

A dog needs energy for breathing, movement, digestion, growth, and repair. The base estimate starts with body weight. Then it changes for age, activity, body condition, and weight goal. Puppies usually need more calories. Senior dogs often need less. Working dogs may need much more.

Read The Food Label Carefully

Wet food labels may list calories per can, tray, pouch, or kilogram. Use the value that matches your package. Also enter the container weight in grams. This lets the calculator estimate calories per gram. That value is needed for daily grams and meal portions.

Include Treats And Mixed Feeding

Treats count as calories. Many feeding plans fail because treats are ignored. A common limit is ten percent of daily calories. The calculator removes treat calories before estimating wet food. You can also set a wet food share. This helps when your dog eats both wet and dry food.

Check Results Over Time

The result is a starting estimate, not a medical prescription. Watch body shape, stool quality, hunger, and weekly weight trend. Adjust slowly when needed. Sudden changes may upset digestion. Ask a veterinarian for puppies, pregnant dogs, sick dogs, and dogs with special diets.

FAQs

1. How much wet food should my dog eat daily?

The amount depends on weight, calories, age, activity, body condition, and treats. Use label calories and your dog details for a better estimate.

2. Can I feed only wet dog food?

Yes, if the food is complete and balanced for your dog life stage. Check the label and ask your veterinarian for special needs.

3. Why does container calorie count matter?

Wet foods vary widely in calories. Two cans with the same weight may provide different energy. Label calories make the estimate more accurate.

4. Should treats be included?

Yes. Treats add calories. Enter a treat percentage so the calculator lowers meal calories and reduces the chance of overfeeding.

5. What if my dog eats dry food too?

Set the wet food calorie share below one hundred percent. The result then estimates only the wet food part of the diet.

6. How many meals should I enter?

Use your real feeding schedule. Many adult dogs eat two meals daily. Puppies and some seniors may need more frequent meals.

7. Is this calculator suitable for puppies?

It includes puppy factors. Puppies grow quickly, so review portions often. Ask a veterinarian for breed-specific growth and feeding advice.

8. When should I change the portion?

Adjust when weight, activity, body condition, appetite, or health changes. Make small changes and track results over several weeks.
