Formula Used

  1. Night in Bed = Time from bedtime to next morning wake time.
  2. Actual Night Sleep = Night in Bed − Sleep Onset Minutes − (Night Wakings × Average Awake Minutes).
  3. Actual Total Sleep = Actual Night Sleep + Daytime Nap Minutes.
  4. Target Day Sleep = Target Total Sleep × Age-Based Daytime Ratio.
  5. Target Night Sleep = Target Total Sleep − Target Day Sleep.
  6. Recommended Bedtime = Wake Time + (24 Hours − Target Night Sleep).
  7. Sleep Balance = Actual Total Sleep − Target Total Sleep.
  8. Nap Duration Per Nap = Target Day Sleep × Nap Ratio for the age band.

Age bands drive the sleep range, wake window range, suggested nap count, and day-versus-night sleep split.

FAQs

1) What does this calculator estimate?

It estimates age-based total sleep, daytime sleep, nighttime sleep, wake windows, suggested naps, and a bedtime target using the inputs you provide.

2) Is this a medical diagnosis tool?

No. It supports sleep routine planning only. It does not diagnose sleep disorders, feeding issues, reflux, breathing problems, or developmental concerns.

3) Why can the recommended bedtime differ from our current bedtime?

The calculator works backward from age-based sleep targets and your wake time. Your current bedtime may be earlier or later than that calculated target.

4) Should wake windows always be followed exactly?

No. Wake windows are guides, not rules. Hunger, illness, teething, travel, development, and temperament can all change the best timing on a given day.

5) What if actual sleep is below target?

A lower total can suggest overtiredness, shortened naps, delayed bedtime, or frequent wakings. Look for patterns over several days before changing the routine.

6) Can longer naps reduce nighttime sleep?

Sometimes. Very long daytime sleep can shift pressure away from nighttime sleep. The effect depends on age, nap timing, and the child’s usual sleep needs.

7) Why track night wakings and sleep onset minutes?

Those inputs help estimate actual overnight sleep more realistically. Time in bed is not the same as time asleep, especially with frequent or long wakings.

8) When should I speak with a pediatrician?

Ask for medical guidance if you notice breathing pauses, poor feeding, poor growth, persistent snoring, unusual sleepiness, or ongoing sleep struggles that worry you.
