This calculator uses weighted credits, so courses with more credit hours have stronger impact on the semester and cumulative result.

Example data table

Course Credits Grade Grade Points Quality Points
Linear Algebra 3.00 A- 3.70 11.10
Programming Fundamentals 4.00 A 4.00 16.00
Macroeconomics 3.00 B+ 3.30 9.90
Communication Skills 2.00 A 4.00 8.00

Formula used

Course quality points = Course credits × Grade points

Semester GPA = Sum of semester quality points ÷ Sum of semester credits

Projected cumulative GPA = (Current cumulative quality points + Semester quality points) ÷ (Current cumulative credits + Semester credits)

Required future GPA for target = [(Target GPA × Final planned credits) − New cumulative quality points] ÷ Planned future credits

Frequently asked questions

1. What does cumulative GPA mean?

Cumulative GPA is the weighted average of all graded courses completed so far. It combines past semesters using credit hours, not simple course counts.

2. What is the difference between semester GPA and cumulative GPA?

Semester GPA uses only the courses entered for the current term. Cumulative GPA blends your prior academic record with the new semester results.

3. Does this calculator work for 4.0, 5.0, and 10.0 scales?

Yes. Choose the scale that matches your institution. The grade dropdown and projection rules update to fit the selected grading system.

4. Can I use it before final grades are released?

Yes. Enter expected grades to test scenarios, compare outcomes, and see how stronger or weaker course performance could shift your cumulative result.

5. How should I handle repeated courses?

Follow your institution’s repeat policy. If an old grade is fully replaced, update your current cumulative GPA first, then use only the new attempt here.

6. Should pass or fail courses be included?

Only include courses that affect GPA. If pass or fail modules earn credits without grade points, leave them out unless your institution counts them differently.

7. Why does the target GPA sometimes look impossible?

A target becomes unrealistic when the required future average exceeds the selected grading scale or when too few remaining credits are available to recover.

8. What do the CSV and PDF buttons export?

CSV exports the result summary and course breakdown. PDF captures the calculated result section, including the summary table and visual chart.
