Pick the scenario you need for planning.
Optional points added to your total earned.
Sum of points you already earned.
Total points available in completed work.
Points still available in future work.
Example: 85 for an A-range target.
Use an estimate to forecast your final.
Your scored marks in a component.
Maximum marks for that component.
Used to compute required marks.

Tip: If the required remaining percentage is above 100%, your target is not achievable without extra credit, a curve, or revised grading weights.

Example data table

Scenario Current / Total Remaining Target Required on Remaining
Course points 320 / 400 200 85% 95%
Course points 280 / 350 150 80% 78.33%
Marks component 42 / 60 75% Need 45 / 60
Numbers are illustrative. Your grading policy may differ.

Formula used

  • Current percentage: Current% = (CurrentPoints / CurrentTotal) × 100
  • Required remaining points for a target: NeededRemaining = (Target%/100) × (CurrentTotal + RemainingTotal) − CurrentPoints − BonusPoints
  • Required remaining percentage: RequiredRemaining% = (NeededRemaining / RemainingTotal) × 100
  • Marks to percentage: Percent = (ObtainedMarks / TotalMarks) × 100
  • Target marks: RequiredMarks = (Desired%/100) × TotalMarks − BonusPoints
  • Projected final percentage: Final% = (CurrentPoints + ExpectedRemainingPoints + BonusPoints) / (CurrentTotal + RemainingTotal) × 100
Bonus points can represent extra credit or an applied curve.

FAQs

1) What is a target percentage in a course?

A target percentage is the overall grade you aim to finish with. It combines completed work and remaining assessments into one final number.

2) Why can required remaining percentage exceed 100%?

If your current score is too low for the goal, the remaining points cannot mathematically bridge the gap. Extra credit, bonus points, or a different target may help.

3) How do I use bonus or curve points?

Enter bonus points if your instructor adds extra credit or applies a curve as points. The calculator subtracts these from what you still need.

4) What if my class uses weighted categories?

This tool works best with points-based grading. For weighted categories, convert each category to points or run the calculator per category and combine results carefully.

5) Can I plan for multiple remaining assignments?

Yes. Add up all remaining possible points and enter that total. The required remaining percentage represents your average needed across those items.

6) How accurate is the projected final percentage?

It is accurate if your expected remaining percentage matches your future performance and the point totals are correct. Changing effort or assessment difficulty can shift outcomes.

7) What should I do if the target seems unreachable?

Recheck totals, include legitimate bonus points, and consider a revised target. You can also use the projected mode to set realistic expectations.

8) Does this replace academic advising?

No. It is a planning aid for understanding grade math. For policy questions, grading disputes, or course planning, consult your instructor or academic advisor.
