Roof Area Planning Guide

A roof area calculation starts with the flat plan size. Measure the building length and width. Then add eave and rake overhangs where they apply. The flat plan area is not the final roof area on a pitched roof. Pitch increases the surface because each plane rises above the plan. This calculator uses the pitch slope factor to convert plan area into sloped surface area.

Why pitch matters

Pitch is usually written as rise over twelve. A 6 in 12 roof rises six units for every twelve units of run. The slope factor is found from a right triangle. Higher pitch means a longer roof surface. A flat roof has a factor near one. A steep roof has a larger factor and needs more material.

Good measuring practice

Measure from outside edge to outside edge when overhangs are included. Keep all measurements in the same unit. Check each roof face if the building is not a simple rectangle. Record dormers separately. Add difficult sections instead of guessing. Always round material upward. Roof work needs safe access, accurate site checks, and allowance for damage discovered during removal.
