Formula Used

General Prism Formula

Volume = Base Area × Prism Length

The base area depends on the cross section shape. Prism length is the perpendicular distance between the two matching faces.

Surface Area Add-on

Lateral Surface Area = Base Perimeter × Prism Length

Total Surface Area = Lateral Surface Area + 2 × Base Area

  • Rectangular prism: Base Area = length × width
  • Triangular prism: Base Area = ½ × base × height
  • Trapezoidal prism: Base Area = ((a + b) ÷ 2) × height
  • Regular polygon prism: Base Area = (n × side²) ÷ (4 × tan(π ÷ n))
  • Custom base area prism: Volume = entered base area × prism length

FAQs

1. What is the main formula for prism volume?

A prism’s volume equals base area multiplied by prism length. First find the exact cross sectional area, then multiply by the perpendicular distance between the parallel faces.

2. Can I use different shapes with this calculator?

Yes. This version supports rectangular, triangular, trapezoidal, regular polygon, and custom base area prisms. That makes it useful for classroom work, design estimates, and geometry practice.

3. Why do I need one unit for all dimensions?

Using one consistent length unit prevents conversion mistakes. If your numbers are mixed, convert them first. The calculator then returns area and volume in matching squared and cubed units.

4. What does the liters result mean?

The liters value converts the computed volume into a capacity style unit. It is especially helpful for metric measurements, storage interpretation, and real world container comparisons.

5. Why are some surface area values unavailable?

Surface area needs the base perimeter. If optional side lengths or perimeter are missing, the calculator can still find volume, but it cannot always compute lateral and total surface area.

6. How does the regular polygon prism option work?

It uses the exact regular polygon area formula based on side count and side length. After finding that base area, it multiplies by prism length to produce the volume.

7. What does the Plotly graph show?

The graph shows how volume changes as prism length increases while the base area stays fixed. It helps you visualize proportional growth and quickly compare scaled lengths.

8. When should I use custom base area?

Use custom base area when you already know the cross sectional area from another calculation. This shortcut is convenient for complex shapes that are not directly listed in the selector.
