Example Data Table

These sample cases show how the defined-benefit portion changes with service credit and monthly basic pay.

System Service Pay Base Multiplier Estimated Gross Monthly Pay
BRS 20 years $6,500.00 40.00% $2,600.00
High-36 22 years, 6 months $7,200.00 56.25% $4,050.00
Final Pay 24 years $7,800.00 60.00% $4,680.00

Formula Used

The calculator applies simplified planning formulas. Verify final figures through official retirement and pay channels.

Creditable Service = Whole Years + (Additional Months ÷ 12)
Service Multiplier = Creditable Service × Plan Multiplier
Gross Monthly Retired Pay = Monthly Basic-Pay Base × Service Multiplier
Estimated SBP Premium = Gross Monthly Retired Pay × Coverage Base × 6.5%
Projected TSP Value = Current Balance(1 + r/12)^n + Monthly Contribution × [((1 + r/12)^n − 1) ÷ (r/12)]

The BRS planning multiplier is 2.0% per creditable service year. High-36 and Final Pay use 2.5% per year in this calculator. The pay base is the high-36 monthly average unless you select Final Pay.

The tax and survivor figures are configurable assumptions. They reduce the displayed net estimate but do not determine official deductions.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Select the retirement system from your official records.
  2. Enter creditable years and remaining whole months of service.
  3. Use the correct monthly basic-pay base. Do not add housing or food allowances.
  4. Add planning assumptions for COLA, taxes, survivor coverage, VA compensation, and TSP growth.
  5. Press the calculation button. Review the result above the form.
  6. Download the CSV or PDF summary after a result appears. Recheck every assumption before making decisions.

Retirement Planning Essentials

Air Force retirement planning starts with the retirement system shown on your records. Most current members use the Blended Retirement System. Many earlier members remain under High-36. A smaller group may use Final Pay or REDUX rules. This calculator focuses on BRS, High-36, and Final Pay estimates. It does not replace a formal retirement pay calculation.

Your years and months of creditable service drive the pension percentage. Every complete month matters. Enter service carefully. Verify inactive time, breaks in service, and credit adjustments with personnel records. A small entry error can change a monthly estimate for decades. The calculator converts months into a fraction of a year.

The pay base also matters. BRS and High-36 use an average of the highest thirty-six months of basic pay. Allowances are not part of that base. Final Pay uses the applicable final basic pay approach. Use a realistic amount from pay records or official planning tools. Do not substitute total compensation for basic pay.

The pension result is a gross monthly estimate. It appears before federal withholding, state tax, allotments, and similar deductions. The calculator lets you add planning percentages for taxes. Those percentages are estimates, not tax advice. Your actual liability depends on filing status, deductions, residence, other income, and changing tax rules.

Survivor Benefit Plan choices can reduce monthly disposable income. This page estimates a premium by applying a planning rate to the coverage base you choose. Actual elections, premiums, beneficiary rules, and termination options require official review. Use the result to compare scenarios rather than select a benefit. Discuss survivor protection with your family before signing paperwork.

The optional VA compensation field is displayed separately. It is not merged into the pension formula. Concurrent receipt, Combat-Related Special Compensation, disability retirement, recoupment, and waiver rules can alter actual deposits. Those programs have detailed eligibility requirements. Contact the appropriate official office before relying on a combined income figure.

The TSP projection is separate from retired pay. It compounds the balance and planned monthly contributions using your assumed annual return. Markets do not produce fixed returns. Fees, contribution timing, fund selection, withdrawals, and inflation will affect actual outcomes. Test conservative and optimistic return assumptions. A range of estimates is more useful than one confident number.

COLA assumptions show how a gross pension could change during retirement. The calculator uses a simple annual compounding model. It does not predict future statutory adjustments. Projected lifetime totals are also illustrative. They help compare income duration, but they cannot guarantee purchasing power.

Review each field before using the result. Save the CSV or PDF summary for a discussion with a financial counselor, retirement services office, tax professional, or trusted adviser. Recalculate after promotion, pay changes, marriage, divorce, disability decisions, or updated retirement dates. Good planning uses several scenarios and current official records.

It also records assumptions that may need fresh verification later before important financial commitments occur.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is this an official AFPC calculator?

No. This is an independent educational planner. It is not affiliated with AFPC, DFAS, DoD, or the Department of Veterans Affairs. Use official records and authorized calculators for decisions, elections, and final retirement estimates.

2. Which pay figure should I enter?

Enter the monthly high-36 average basic pay for BRS or High-36. Enter applicable final monthly basic pay for Final Pay. Do not include allowances, bonuses, special pays, or your total compensation package.

3. How does BRS change the pension calculation?

This page uses a 2.0% service multiplier for BRS. At 20 creditable years, that produces a 40% multiplier before other deductions. The separate TSP projection helps you evaluate the defined-contribution portion.

4. Does it calculate reserve retirement?

No. Reserve and Guard retirement commonly depends on retirement points, equivalent service, eligibility age, and other rules. This version is designed for an active-duty-style service-years estimate.

5. Is VA compensation included in retired pay?

No. The calculator shows VA compensation separately as an optional planning line. It does not determine offsets, concurrent receipt, CRDP, CRSC, waivers, disability retirement rules, or eligibility.

6. Is the SBP premium exact?

No. The page uses a simple 6.5% planning rate on your selected coverage base. Actual premium, election, beneficiary, termination, and tax details should be confirmed with official retirement specialists.

7. Are taxes calculated exactly?

No. Federal and state fields use user-selected percentages. Actual taxes depend on filing status, deductions, residence, other income, withholding elections, and current law. Ask a qualified tax professional for personal guidance.

8. What does the COLA field do?

It compounds the displayed gross pension during your selected retirement period. It is an illustration, not a forecast. Future statutory COLA changes may be higher, lower, delayed, or calculated differently.

9. How is the TSP value projected?

The calculation compounds the current balance and monthly contributions using your annual return assumption. It ignores fees, fund changes, contribution limits, withdrawals, taxes, and market volatility. Results are not guaranteed.

10. Can I use this before I know my retirement date?

Yes. Use a tentative date and run multiple service scenarios. Update all inputs after receiving new orders, promotions, pay changes, approved service credit, or an official retirement calculation.

11. Why should I compare several scenarios?

Different service lengths, pay assumptions, survivor elections, taxes, and savings rates can materially change income. Comparing conservative and optimistic cases can make trade-offs clearer before you seek official counseling.
