Formula used
Adjusted distance = route distance × trip multiplier × (1 + detour percentage ÷ 100).
Driving fuel uses the selected efficiency model. For kilometres per litre, fuel = adjusted kilometres ÷ kilometres per litre. For litres per 100 kilometres, fuel = adjusted kilometres × litres per 100 kilometres ÷ 100.
Total fuel = driving fuel + idling fuel + reserve fuel. Reserve fuel = (driving fuel + idling fuel) × reserve percentage ÷ 100.
Total trip cost = total fuel × converted price per litre + tolls + other trip costs. Gallon-based choices are converted internally for consistent calculation.

Highway driving may improve efficiency until high speed raises aerodynamic drag. Roof racks, trailers, low tyre pressure, and heavy cargo can reduce economy. Cold engines also use more fuel. Apply Fuel Prices Correctly
Fuel price should reflect the unit sold at your station. Select litres when prices are listed per litre. Select the correct gallon type when necessary. United States gallons and Imperial gallons are different sizes. The calculator changes the price into a common litre basis. It then combines that price with expected fuel use. Choose a currency symbol that matches your planning sheet. Tolls and other expenses are added after fuel cost.
Include Route Adjustments
Route adjustments make planning more realistic. Use the trip type for one-way or return travel. Add a detour percentage for side roads, parking searches, or flexible routing. 2. Which fuel-efficiency value should I enter?
Use a recent average from your vehicle display or fuel records. Choose the matching format, such as kilometres per litre, litres per 100 kilometres, US mpg, or Imperial mpg.
3. Are US gallons and Imperial gallons the same?
No. An Imperial gallon is larger than a US gallon. Select the correct gallon type because the choice changes both the fuel conversion and the price conversion.
4. What does detour allowance do?
It increases the planned route distance by a percentage. Use it for side roads, missed exits, parking searches, diversions, or flexible travel plans.
5. Should I include idling fuel?
Include it when you expect queues, long warm-up periods, border crossings, drive-through lines, or waiting with the engine running. Enter the amount in your selected fuel unit.
6. What is fuel reserve?
Fuel reserve is an extra percentage added after driving and idling fuel. It provides a buffer for weather, traffic, hills, route changes, and uncertain driving conditions.
7. Can I include tolls and parking?
Yes. Add tolls under road fees. Add parking, ferry charges, or similar items under other trip costs. Both values are included in the final estimate.
8. Why is cost per mile also shown?
It helps compare routes and vehicles when information is given in miles. The calculator derives this figure from the same adjusted journey and total trip cost.
9. Can this estimate emissions?
No. This tool estimates fuel and trip spending. Emissions need fuel-specific carbon factors and may vary by fuel blend, vehicle use, and operating conditions.
10. Why can actual spending differ?
Actual cost can change with fuel price, congestion, wind, terrain, payload, tyre pressure, driving style, temperature, and the accuracy of your efficiency estimate.
