Calculate Margin Buying Power

Formula Used

Effective equity = Account equity - Risk reserve.

Effective initial rate = Higher of initial margin rate and non-marginable equity rate.

Maximum allowed exposure = Lower of effective equity ÷ effective initial rate and effective equity × broker multiplier.

Remaining buying power = Maximum allowed exposure - current market value.

Initial excess = Effective equity - new market value × effective initial rate.

Maintenance excess = Equity after fees - new market value × maintenance rate.

Stress equity = Equity after fees - new market value × expected drop rate.

About Margin Buying Power

Margin buying power shows the extra value a trader may control after using equity and allowed borrowing. It is not free cash. It is a borrowing limit based on account equity, broker rules, and current exposure. This calculator treats the account like a balanced system. Equity acts like stored energy. Debt acts like load. The input rules decide how much motion is still safe.

Why the Calculation Matters

A margin account can expand gains, yet it can also expand losses. A small price drop can reduce equity quickly. When equity falls below the maintenance requirement, the account may face a margin call. The tool estimates buying power, required equity, projected loan value, and stress loss. It also shows whether a planned order stays inside the selected initial and maintenance limits.

Main Inputs

Enter current equity, cash, margin debt, and current market value. Then choose the initial margin percentage. Use fifty percent for a common stock margin model. Use a higher value for stricter control. The maintenance percentage checks the lower safety floor. The risk reserve removes part of equity before new buying power is calculated. This makes the result more conservative.

Interpreting Results

Remaining buying power means the estimated additional order value that fits the chosen initial rule. Proposed order status compares your planned shares and price with that limit. Excess initial equity shows room left after the trade. Maintenance excess shows protection after the trade. Stress equity uses the expected price drop to test a rough downside case. Review after deposits, withdrawals, dividends, or market changes. Account numbers move throughout the day. Fresh inputs give a cleaner view than old screenshots and pending fills too.

Practical Notes

Real brokers can apply house rules, concentration rules, day trading rules, and non marginable security limits. Options, futures, and short sales may use different rules. This calculator is for planning. It does not replace broker statements. Always compare the result with your live platform before placing an order.

Better Risk Habits

Keep some unused buying power. Avoid using the full limit. Check the margin call drop percentage before increasing size. A trade that looks affordable can still be fragile. Strong planning keeps leverage visible and easier to manage.

FAQs

What is margin buying power?

Margin buying power is the estimated value of extra securities you can buy using account equity and allowed borrowing.

Is margin buying power the same as cash?

No. Cash is your available money. Margin buying power includes borrowed capacity, so it can increase both profit and loss.

What is initial margin?

Initial margin is the equity percentage required to open a position. A fifty percent rule means half the trade must be supported by equity.

What is maintenance margin?

Maintenance margin is the minimum equity level required after a position is open. Falling below it may trigger a margin call.

Why add a risk reserve?

A risk reserve keeps part of your equity unused. It gives the account more room against price drops and rule changes.

Why can broker results differ?

Brokers may apply house rules, concentration limits, security restrictions, and real time price updates. Their platform is the final source.

Can this calculator handle non-marginable securities?

Yes. Set the security marginable value lower. A zero percent value makes the proposed security fully cash based.

Does this give financial advice?

No. It is an educational planning tool. Always check broker terms and consider risk before using borrowed funds.
