Example Data Table

Scenario Gross Weight Tare Weight Trips Net Move Weight Use Case
Small apartment 10,400 lb 8,700 lb 1 1,700 lb Light household goods
Two-bedroom home 16,000 lb 11,200 lb 1 4,800 lb Moderate shipment
Large home 24,500 lb 13,000 lb 1 11,500 lb Heavy shipment
Two trips 14,000 lb 10,500 lb 2 7,000 lb Repeated trailer load

Formula Used

Certified net weight: Net Weight = (Gross Loaded Weight − Empty Tare Weight) × Number of Trips

Cargo volume: Volume = Length × Width × Height

Volume estimate: Estimated Weight = Volume × Planning Density

Itemized estimate: Item Weight = (Boxes × Average Box Weight) + (Large Items × Average Large Item Weight) + Miscellaneous Weight

Adjusted move weight: Adjusted Weight = Base Weight × (1 + Packing Adjustment ÷ 100)

Payable or counted weight: Payable Weight = Adjusted Weight − Excluded Weight

Physics force: Force = Mass × Gravity, where mass is calculated from pounds to kilograms.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the loaded vehicle weight from a scale ticket.
  2. Enter the empty vehicle weight from the tare ticket.
  3. Add the number of trips if the same load pattern repeats.
  4. Enter cargo dimensions to create a volume-based estimate.
  5. Add box counts, large items, and miscellaneous estimated weight.
  6. Choose a calculation method or keep the automatic option.
  7. Enter allowance, excluded weight, rate, and safety margin.
  8. Click calculate, then download CSV or PDF results.

DITY Move Weight Planning Guide

Why Weight Matters

A DITY move depends on accurate weight planning. The most useful number is the net shipment weight. It comes from a loaded scale ticket and an empty scale ticket. The calculator also supports early estimates. This helps before the truck is packed. It also helps compare quotes, allowance limits, and payout assumptions.

Scale Tickets and Estimates

Certified tickets are usually stronger than rough estimates. Still, estimates are useful during planning. A home may not be packed yet. A truck size may not be chosen. In that case, volume and item counts help. The tool compares loaded weight, cargo volume, density, and itemized household goods. This gives a wider view.

Physics Behind the Result

Weight is related to gravity. Mass measures matter. Weight force measures gravitational pull on that mass. This calculator converts pounds into kilograms. It then multiplies mass by local gravity. Standard gravity is 9.80665 meters per second squared. You can change it for special physics comparisons.

Density and Space Use

Density shows how tightly the load is packed. A low density may mean wasted space. A high density may mean very heavy goods in a small area. Household goods often vary widely. Books, tools, appliances, and furniture can change density quickly. Use your own known data when available.

Allowance and Safety Margin

The allowance comparison shows whether the planned move is under or over a target weight. The safety margin adds extra planning room. It is useful when box weights are uncertain. It also helps when packing materials, garage items, or storage goods are not fully counted. Treat the payout estimate as a planning figure only. Actual payment rules may differ by program, date, document, and official review.

FAQs

1. What is a DITY move weight calculator?

It estimates shipment weight using scale tickets, cargo dimensions, item counts, packing adjustment, and allowance limits.

2. Which weight is most accurate?

A certified loaded ticket minus a certified empty ticket is usually the strongest weight source for real moves.

3. Can I use dimensions instead of tickets?

Yes. Enter length, width, height, and density. The calculator will estimate weight from the occupied cargo volume.

4. What does packing adjustment mean?

It adds a percentage for boxes, pads, wrapping, pallets, and small items missed during early planning.

5. What is excluded weight?

Excluded weight is any weight you want removed from the counted amount, such as special equipment or non-payable items.

6. Why does the calculator show force in newtons?

This is the physics value of weight force. It equals mass multiplied by gravitational acceleration.

7. Is the payout estimate official?

No. It is only a planning estimate based on your entered rate. Always verify actual rules and documents.

8. Can I export my result?

Yes. Use the CSV button for spreadsheet data, or the PDF button for a printable result summary.
