Dog Feeding by Weight Guide
A dog feeding calculator by weight turns body mass into a daily energy target. It starts with rest energy need. Then it adjusts that number for age, activity, body condition, and feeding goal. This method is useful because every dog burns energy at a different rate.
Why Weight Matters
Weight is the main input because larger bodies need more energy. The increase is not perfectly linear. A small dog often needs more calories per kilogram than a large dog. That is why the calculator uses metabolic weight. This is a physics style model. It links body size to energy demand.
Food Energy and Portions
Dog food labels normally show calories per cup or per can. The calculator changes calories into cups, grams, cans, and meal portions. This helps when dry food and wet food are mixed. It also reserves a treat allowance, so snacks do not quietly exceed the daily plan.
Body Condition and Goals
Body condition score adds real world context. A lean dog may need more energy. An overweight dog may need a controlled target. The tool can estimate an ideal weight from the score. You may also enter a target weight from your vet. Use slow daily changes. Sudden diet changes can upset digestion.
Practical Feeding Tips
Measure food with a kitchen scale when possible. Cups can vary by shape and kibble size. Recheck weight every two to four weeks. Adjust portions when the dog gains or loses too fast. Puppies, pregnant dogs, working dogs, and nursing mothers need special care. Their needs can rise quickly. Always use veterinary guidance for medical diets.
Formula Used
The calculator estimates RER as 70 × weight kg0.75. The optional linear method is 30 × weight kg + 70. Maintenance energy equals RER × profile factor × goal factor × body condition factor × activity factor. Food grams equal meal calories divided by calories per gram. Cups equal grams divided by grams per cup.
How to Use This Calculator
Enter your dog's weight first. Choose the weight unit. Select the closest profile and body condition score. Add food label values. Pick dry, wet, or mixed feeding. Enter meals per day and treat percentage. Press calculate. Review calories, total portions, and portion per meal.
