Current heating fuel units = Heating load ÷ Current efficiency ÷ Fuel energy per unit.

Current cooling kWh = Cooling ton-hours × 12,000 ÷ Current SEER ÷ 1,000.

Geothermal heating kWh = Heating load × 293.071 ÷ Geothermal COP.

Geothermal cooling kWh = Cooling ton-hours × 12,000 ÷ Geothermal EER ÷ 1,000.

Annual savings = Current annual cost − Geothermal annual cost.

Simple payback = Net project cost ÷ Annual savings.

What The Results Mean

The annual savings value shows the difference between current operating cost and geothermal operating cost. Net project cost subtracts tax credits, rebates, and other incentives from installed cost. Simple payback divides net cost by annual savings. Net present value discounts future savings, so distant dollars count less than today’s dollars. Lifetime savings subtracts the net investment from total estimated savings across the study period.
