A geothermal heat pump moves heat instead of burning fuel. It uses the steady ground temperature as a heat source in winter and a heat sink in summer. This calculator compares your existing system with a geothermal design. It turns heating load, cooling load, rates, efficiency, incentives, and maintenance into a practical savings view.
Why Ground Energy Matters
Air temperature changes quickly. Soil temperature changes slowly. A buried loop can help the heat pump work with lower lift. That often raises the coefficient of performance for heating. It can also improve cooling efficiency during hot weather. The result is lower purchased energy for the same comfort load.
What The Results Mean
The annual savings value shows the difference between current operating cost and geothermal operating cost. Net project cost subtracts tax credits, rebates, and other incentives from installed cost. Simple payback divides net cost by annual savings. Net present value discounts future savings, so distant dollars count less than today’s dollars. Lifetime savings subtracts the net investment from total estimated savings across the study period.
Good Inputs Improve Accuracy
Use utility bills, fuel delivery records, Manual J reports, or building simulation data when available. Heating load should be delivered heat, not raw fuel purchased. Cooling load should be ton hours or another estimated seasonal cooling demand. If you only know old equipment ratings, use conservative values. Small changes in fuel price, electric rate, and seasonal performance can change the answer.
How To Read The Physics
COP compares useful heat delivered with electric energy used. A COP of four means four units of heat are delivered for each unit of electric input. EER compares cooling output with electric input. Higher EER means fewer kilowatt hours for the same cooling work. The calculator also estimates emissions by multiplying energy use by selected emission factors.

Geothermal projects can save money, but site work matters. Loop type, drilling cost, soil condition, duct condition, pump power, and installer quality all affect performance. Consider comfort, equipment life, noise, resilience, and available incentives along with payback. Use the output as a screening estimate before requesting a detailed proposal. Review warranty limits and seasonal assumptions before signing any contract or financing agreement too.
