Example Data Table

Attack DV Defense DV Speed DV Special DV Hidden Type Base Power HP DV
15 15 15 15 Dark 70 15
14 15 13 6 Electric 67 6
10 10 13 8 Grass 68 2
13 13 15 15 Bug 70 15

Formula Used

Type value: 4 × (Attack DV mod 4) + (Defense DV mod 4).

The type value maps from 0 to 15. The order is Fighting, Flying, Poison, Ground, Rock, Bug, Ghost, Steel, Fire, Water, Grass, Electric, Psychic, Ice, Dragon, and Dark.

Power value: floor(((5 × X + Y) ÷ 2) + 31).

X is built from four damage bits. Attack contributes 8, Defense contributes 4, Speed contributes 2, and Special contributes 1. A DV of 8 or more gives a damage bit of 1. A lower DV gives 0. Y is Special DV mod 4.

HP DV: odd Attack adds 8, odd Defense adds 4, odd Speed adds 2, and odd Special adds 1.

GSC Hidden Power Guide

Why the Move Matters

Hidden Power changed team building in the second generation. Many monsters lacked coverage moves. This move gave them a possible answer. Its type and base power depend on DVs. That makes planning important before breeding or training. A small DV change can move the result from Electric to Grass. It can also lower the strength by many points. This calculator helps you see those effects quickly.

Understanding the Inputs

Gold, Silver, and Crystal store four main DVs. They are Attack, Defense, Speed, and Special. Each value runs from 0 to 15. HP DV is not entered directly. It is derived from the odd or even status of those four DVs. The tool shows that derived HP DV for reference. It also shows each binary part, so the calculation is easier to audit.

Reading the Type

The Hidden Power type comes from Attack and Defense only. The calculator takes the last two bits of Attack. Then it joins the last two bits of Defense. The combined number points to one of sixteen types. Normal is not possible. Fairy did not exist in these games. The result can be compared with a desired type choice.

Reading the Power

Base power uses the highest bit of Attack, Defense, Speed, and Special. A DV of eight or more gives one. A lower DV gives zero. These four bits form a number called X. The remainder of Special divided by four gives Y. The final base power ranges from 31 to 70.

Battle Planning Tips

Use the category line when planning damage. In this generation, move category depends on type. Fire, Water, Electric, Grass, Ice, Psychic, Dragon, and Dark are special. Other listed types are physical. STAB and effectiveness in this page are simplified multipliers. They help compare options. They are not a full damage formula. Real damage also uses level, stats, badges, weather, items, screens, and random variation.

Use the export buttons after calculating. CSV works well for spreadsheets. PDF is useful for saving a breeding note. Keep several candidates in your records. Then choose the one with the best mix of type, power, HP DV, and team role. Review notes again after each new hatch.

FAQs

What does GSC mean?

GSC means Gold, Silver, and Crystal. These second generation games use DVs, not the later six-stat IV system, for Hidden Power type and base power.

What DV range should I enter?

Enter values from 0 to 15 only. GSC stores Attack, Defense, Speed, and Special DVs in that range.

Can Hidden Power be Normal type?

No. In this generation, Hidden Power can map to sixteen types, but Normal is not one of the possible results.

Can Hidden Power be Fairy type?

No. Fairy type did not exist in Gold, Silver, or Crystal, so this calculator does not include it.

Why is HP DV calculated automatically?

GSC does not store HP DV directly. It is derived from whether Attack, Defense, Speed, and Special DVs are odd or even.

What is the best base power?

The highest GSC Hidden Power base power is 70. A result near 70 is usually preferred when the type also fits your team plan.

Does this calculate real battle damage?

No. It estimates type, base power, category, STAB, and effectiveness. Full damage also needs stats, level, random variation, screens, items, weather, and modifiers.

Why include CSV and PDF export?

Exports help track breeding candidates. CSV is useful for sorting data. PDF is useful for saving one clean result record.
