Accurate hydrometer calculations for brewing success.
Specific gravity (SG) measurement is the cornerstone of successful mead making. By measuring sugar density relative to water at regular intervals, brewers can track fermentation health, verify yeast attenuation, and determine final alcohol content. Honey contains complex sugars that require precise tracking to prevent stalled fermentations.
This calculator relies on established brewing equations to deliver precise metrics. The standard Alcohol By Volume (ABV) formula uses the straightforward difference between original and final gravity:
$$\text{ABV} = (\text{OG} - \text{FG}) \times 131.25$$
For high-gravity meads, an advanced alternate formula accounting for density curve non-linearities is also calculated to give professional-grade accuracy. Temperature adjustments factor in thermal expansion differences of aqueous sugar solutions calibrated typically at 60°F.
