Digital audio begins as pressure changes in air. A microphone converts those changes into electrical signals. Sampling measures the signal many times per second. Bit depth records each sample with a fixed number of possible values. Uncompressed audio size follows sample rate, bit depth, channels, and duration. MP3 compression removes masked or less audible detail. This makes the stored bitstream much smaller than raw waveform data.
