7.1 MHz 3 Circle 1.0 m diameter 12 mm copper 25 W

Formula Used

Wheeler inductance: LµH = r²N² / (8r + 11w). The radius r and winding width w are in inches.

Tuning capacitance: C = 1 / ((2πf)²L). The answer is converted to picofarads.

Radiation resistance: Rr = 31200 × (N × A / λ²)². This is a small-loop approximation.

Skin depth: δ = √(2ρ / (ωµ0)). AC resistance uses the effective conductor surface area.

Q and bandwidth: Q = XL / (Rr + Rloss). Bandwidth = f / Q.

Efficiency: Efficiency = Rr / (Rr + Rloss) × 100.

About Multi Turn Loop Design

A multi turn magnetic loop is a compact antenna system. It uses several turns to raise inductance and magnetic coupling. This calculator helps estimate the electrical behavior before metal is cut. It is useful for receiving loops, low power transmitting loops, portable work, and laboratory comparisons.

Why These Inputs Matter

Frequency sets the wavelength and reactance. Loop size sets area and radiation resistance. More turns raise inductance, but they also add conductor length and loss. Conductor diameter changes skin effect resistance. Turn spacing changes winding width and the Wheeler inductance estimate. Material choice changes resistivity. Capacitor limits decide whether the loop can tune the chosen frequency.

Performance Meaning

A good loop has a practical tuning capacitance and a manageable voltage. High Q means narrow bandwidth. Narrow bandwidth can improve selectivity, but it makes tuning critical. Efficiency depends on the ratio between radiation resistance and loss resistance. Small increases in conductor loss can strongly reduce efficiency, especially on lower bands.

Advanced Design Notes

The calculator uses a small loop radiation model. Results are best when the circumference of one turn is much less than one tenth of a wavelength. If the loop becomes larger, real patterns, distributed capacitance, and feed effects become more important. Multi turn loops also have proximity effect between nearby conductors. The proximity factor lets you raise the estimated AC loss when spacing is tight.

Using Results Safely

Capacitor voltage can be high, even with modest power. Always use a safe voltage margin. Keep hands away from active loops. Avoid lossy joints. Use wide copper strap, tubing, or low resistance wire when transmitting. For receiving, efficiency may be less critical, but tuning range and noise pickup still matter.

Practical Improvements

Try larger diameter first. Then increase conductor size. Next adjust turns and spacing. Keep required capacitance inside the chosen capacitor range. Watch bandwidth. Very small bandwidth may be hard to tune during field use. Compare several examples with the CSV export. Use the PDF export to save a clean design note for your build log.

Limits To Remember

Approximate formulas cannot replace final measurement. Nearby objects, feed cables, solder joints, and weatherproof boxes can shift resonance and loss. Measure the finished loop carefully.

FAQs

What is a multi turn magnetic loop antenna?

It is a compact loop antenna with more than one conductor turn. Extra turns raise inductance and can help tune lower frequencies with practical capacitor values.

Can this calculator be used for transmitting loops?

Yes, it includes power, current, voltage, loss, and efficiency estimates. Always use safe spacing, strong insulation, and proper RF safety practices.

Why is capacitor voltage so high?

The tuned loop has high circulating current and reactance. The capacitor may see much higher voltage than the transmitter output suggests.

What does the proximity factor mean?

It increases conductor loss to model nearby turns. Use a higher value when turns are close, conductors are thin, or construction is compact.

When is the small-loop model valid?

It is most useful when one turn circumference is below about one tenth of a wavelength. Larger loops need fuller antenna modeling.

Why does efficiency change so much?

Small loops often have tiny radiation resistance. A small added loss from wire, joints, or capacitors can reduce efficiency sharply.

What capacitor range should I choose?

Choose a range that comfortably includes the calculated capacitance. Leave adjustment room for nearby objects and construction tolerances.

Should I trust the exact bandwidth number?

Treat it as an estimate. Real bandwidth depends on construction, feed coupling, ground loss, objects nearby, and component quality.
