Pulse pressure variation describes how pulse pressure changes during a respiratory cycle. Pulse pressure is systolic pressure minus diastolic pressure. During positive pressure ventilation, heart filling can change with each breath. Those changes can appear on an arterial waveform. PPV converts that waveform change into one percentage.
