Pulse Pressure Variation Overview
Pulse pressure variation describes how pulse pressure changes during a respiratory cycle. Pulse pressure is systolic pressure minus diastolic pressure. During positive pressure ventilation, heart filling can change with each breath. Those changes can appear on an arterial waveform. PPV converts that waveform change into one percentage. The result helps teams compare maximum and minimum pulse pressures from the same cycle.
Why The Calculation Matters
A simple pressure reading shows one moment. PPV studies a moving pattern. It looks at the difference between the largest and smallest pulse pressure. A larger percentage means the pulse pressure swings more during ventilation. A smaller percentage means the swing is limited. This calculator also reports mean pulse pressure. That value is the average of the maximum and minimum pulse pressures used in the equation.
Practical Measurement Notes
Use values from a clean arterial pressure waveform. Avoid damped lines, flush artifacts, and irregular wave sections. Select one respiratory cycle when possible. Enter the maximum systolic and diastolic pressures from that cycle. Then enter the minimum systolic and diastolic pressures. The calculator can also accept pulse pressures directly. Direct entry is useful when another monitor already displays PPmax and PPmin.
Reading The Result
The interpretation is a guide, not a treatment order. PPV is most meaningful in controlled conditions. It is usually reviewed with ventilation mode, rhythm, tidal volume, lung compliance, and clinical context. Borderline values need careful review. A clinician may compare PPV with ultrasound, stroke volume change, passive leg raising, or other bedside information.
