Calculator Inputs

Example Data Table

Tile size Area Joint width Joint depth Waste Estimated bags
12 in × 12 in 100 sq ft 1/8 in 1/4 in 10% About 1 bag
6 in × 6 in 100 sq ft 1/8 in 1/4 in 10% About 2 bags
2 in × 2 in 100 sq ft 1/8 in 1/4 in 10% About 5 bags

Example values are planning estimates. Actual coverage changes with tile edges, layout, cleanup, and grout packing.

Formula Used

Tile area: tile length × tile width

Joint volume per tile: (tile length + tile width) × joint width × joint depth

Total joint volume: project area ÷ tile area × joint volume per tile

Adjusted volume: total volume × joint fill percentage × waste factor

Grout weight: adjusted volume × grout density

Bags needed: grout weight ÷ bag weight

Override method: project area × waste factor ÷ known coverage per bag

How To Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the total tiled area.
  2. Add tile length and tile width.
  3. Enter the planned grout joint width.
  4. Enter the joint depth that will be filled.
  5. Change density only when you have reliable product data.
  6. Add waste for cleanup, edges, cuts, and repairs.
  7. Enter bag weight and optional price.
  8. Press calculate, then download CSV or PDF if needed.

Planning Grout Coverage

TEC Power Grout coverage matters because grout fills many narrow spaces. A small joint change can alter the bag count. This calculator uses tile geometry, joint depth, project area, density, and waste. It gives a practical estimate before mixing starts.

How The Estimate Works

The method treats each tile as one repeat unit. The joint volume is estimated from the tile length, tile width, joint width, and joint depth. That volume is scaled across the total floor or wall area. The calculator then converts volume to grout weight by using density. Waste is added at the end. This keeps the result simple and easy to review.

Why Coverage Changes

Coverage is not fixed for every job. Large tiles usually need less grout. Small mosaics need more grout because they have more joint length. Wide joints also increase usage. Deep joints increase volume again. Rough tile edges can raise demand. Cleanup loss, bucket residue, and repairs also affect the final amount.

Using Real Field Data

Use the override field when you already have a tested coverage number. Some installers measure coverage from a sample area. That real job value can replace the geometry estimate. The calculator still adds waste, bags, and cost. This makes it useful for quotes and purchase planning.

Buying With A Safety Margin

Results should be treated as planning numbers. Always check the product label, tile layout, and site conditions. Leave extra material for color matching. Buying short can delay work. Buying too much can waste money. A small spare amount is normally helpful for repairs.

Accuracy Tips

For best accuracy, measure the real joint width after dry layout. Use the expected fill depth, not only tile thickness. Change the density only when you have reliable product data. Enter cost per bag for a budget estimate. Export the result when you need records for a client, worksheet, or material list.

Example Use

The example table shows how tile size affects coverage. Compare it with your project. Then adjust waste for cuts, corners, and installer method. The final bag count rounds up when that option is selected. Keep notes by room for larger projects. Recalculate after design changes before ordering final grout bags for the site.

FAQs

What does this calculator estimate?

It estimates grout weight, bag count, coverage per bag, volume, and cost. It uses tile size, joint width, joint depth, area, density, waste, and bag weight.

Is this exact for every TEC Power Grout job?

No. It is a planning estimate. Real coverage can change because of tile edges, surface texture, cleanup loss, installer method, and actual joint depth.

What joint depth should I enter?

Enter the depth that grout will actually fill. This may be close to tile thickness, but backing material, setting mortar, and joint cleaning can change it.

Why do smaller tiles need more grout?

Smaller tiles create more joint length across the same area. More joint length means more empty space to fill, so the bag count usually increases.

When should I use coverage override?

Use it when you already know tested coverage per bag from a sample area, job record, product sheet, or field measurement. It replaces the geometry estimate.

What waste percentage is reasonable?

Many projects use 5% to 15% waste. Use more for mosaics, rough edges, many corners, repairs, difficult cleanup, or uncertain measurements.

Can I use square meters?

Yes. Select square meters for area. The calculator converts area internally. Tile and joint dimensions can also be entered in inches, millimeters, or centimeters.

Why does the calculator round bags up?

Grout is normally purchased by full bag. Rounding up helps avoid shortages. You can turn rounding off when you only need a raw estimate.
