Why dry weight basis matters
Wood chips rarely arrive with one fixed moisture level. Fresh chips can hold a large mass of water. That water changes hauling cost, combustion value, storage behavior, and product yield. A dry weight basis calculation removes that moving water amount from the comparison. It reports the real dry solids in the load. This makes two chip lots easier to compare.
Moisture basis explained
Moisture can be stated on wet basis or dry basis. Wet basis compares water mass with total wet mass. Dry basis compares water mass with oven dry mass. The two values are not the same. A load at 50 percent wet basis moisture is 100 percent dry basis moisture. The calculator converts both systems before it reports dry weight.
Practical use in physics
The method uses mass conservation. Wet mass is the sum of dry solids and water. During drying, water leaves the material. The dry solid mass stays nearly constant. That idea supports energy estimates, density studies, drying trials, and biomass fuel checks. It also helps when chips are sold by dry ton instead of green ton.
Reading the output
The dry weight shows oven dry wood substance. Water mass shows the removable moisture in the entered batch. Dry matter percent shows how much of the wet load is useful solid material. The dry basis moisture value helps compare lab reports that use oven dry reference mass. The wet basis value helps compare field measurements.
Better batch decisions
Use the result before buying, drying, shipping, or burning chips. A heavier wet load is not always a better load. It may simply contain more water. Optional volume and batch fields estimate dry bulk density and repeated production totals. These outputs help plan storage bins, dryers, trucks, boilers, and inventory records.
Accuracy tips
Take several samples from different parts of the pile. Seal samples before weighing. Dry them until mass stops changing. Enter consistent units. Avoid mixing pounds and kilograms in one run. Results are estimates for planning. Confirm critical trade or safety decisions with calibrated lab testing.
Small input changes can shift dry ton totals. Save each run, export results, and compare batches under the same moisture basis for fair inventory records.
