Formula Used

This tool uses a transparent “build-up” approach, similar to CIF valuation.

Customs Value (Foreign) = Goods Value + Freight + Insurance + Packing + Assists + Royalties + Commissions + Inland + Other − Discounts
Customs Value (Local) = Customs Value (Foreign) × Exchange Rate
Duty = Customs Value (Local) × Duty Rate • VAT = (Customs Value (Local) + Duty) × VAT Rate

Rules differ by country and code; treat taxes as estimates.

FAQs

1) What is customs value?

It is the value used by customs to assess duties and taxes. It usually starts from invoice value and adds dutiable costs.

2) Does this tool work for air and sea shipments?

Yes. Enter the correct freight and insurance for the mode. The build-up method is the same; only the cost amounts change.

3) Why are assists and royalties included?

Some valuation rules add buyer-provided assists and certain royalties when they relate to the imported goods. Keep contracts and evidence for audits.

4) What if my invoice is already CIF or CIP?

If freight and insurance are embedded in your invoice price, tick the “included” checkboxes so the calculator does not add them again.

5) Can inland transport be excluded?

It depends on local valuation rules and the point of valuation. Include it only when your regulations treat it as dutiable.

6) Are duty and VAT results official?

No. They are estimates based on the rates you enter. Final assessments can change with tariff code, exemptions, and official exchange rates.

7) Why might broker numbers differ?

Brokers may apply jurisdiction-specific inclusions, official rates, and documentation adjustments. Use this tool for scenario planning and record keeping.
