Cube per unit = Length in feet × Width in feet × Height in feet
2. Total cubic feet
Total cube = Cube per unit × Number of shipment units
3. Density
Density = Total shipment weight in pounds ÷ Total cube in cubic feet
4. Density-based class
The calculator maps density to common LTL density bands such as Class 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 77.5, 85, 92.5, 100, 110, 125, 150, 175, 200, 250, 300, 400, and 500.
5. Adjusted estimate
Handling, packaging, stowability, stackability, declared value, fragility, and hazardous status can move the estimate upward by class steps.

It estimates an LTL freight class using shipment density first, then adjusts that estimate for handling, packaging, liability, stowability, and restriction factors.
2. Is density the only factor in LTL class?
No. Density is important, but handling difficulty, damage risk, stackability limits, hazardous status, and commodity-specific NMFC rules can also change the final class.
3. Why can my carrier quote a different class?
Carriers may use exact NMFC items, inspection results, or commodity exceptions. This tool is a planning estimate, not a carrier-issued classification ruling.
4. Should I measure one pallet or the entire shipment?
Measure one unit or pallet and enter the total number of units. The calculator multiplies the single-unit cube by the shipment unit count.
5. What units can I use for dimensions?
You can enter dimensions in inches, feet, centimeters, or meters. The calculator converts everything to cubic feet before calculating density.
6. Why does declared value affect the estimate?
Higher declared value often signals greater liability exposure. That can cause more careful handling, tighter rules, and a higher practical class estimate.
7. What does non-stackable freight change?
Non-stackable freight uses trailer space less efficiently. Reduced stacking flexibility can push the estimate upward because it limits how the shipment can be loaded.
8. Can I use this for quoting?
