Example Data Table

Sport Reg. Minutes Games Minutes For Against Events For Events Against Baseline Net Opp. Adj Teammate Adj
Basketball 48 12 360 865 828 790 786 2.4 1.8 0.9
Hockey 60 20 310 24 19 420 410 0.8 0.6 0.3
Soccer 90 10 780 17 11 265 240 0.5 0.7 0.2

Formula Used

Raw Plus Minus
Raw Plus Minus = Points or Goals For − Points or Goals Against
Per Game and Per Regulation
Plus Minus per Game = Raw Plus Minus ÷ Games Played
Plus Minus per Regulation = (Raw Plus Minus ÷ Minutes Played) × Regulation Minutes
Possession Based Ratings
Offensive Rating = (Points or Goals For ÷ Possessions or Events For) × 100
Defensive Rating = (Points or Goals Against ÷ Possessions or Events Against) × 100
Net Rating = Offensive Rating − Defensive Rating
Pace Normalization
Average Possessions = (Possessions For + Possessions Against) ÷ 2
Pace per Regulation = (Average Possessions × Regulation Minutes) ÷ Minutes Played
Adjusted Impact
Adjusted Impact = Net Rating − Team Baseline Net Rating + Opponent Strength Adjustment − Teammate Support Adjustment
Stabilization
Reliability Percentage = Minimum of 100 and [Minutes Played ÷ (Games Played × Regulation Minutes)] × 100
Stabilized Impact = Adjusted Impact × Reliability Percentage

This framework combines raw plus minus, efficiency, pace, and contextual adjustments. It is useful for lineup analysis, player comparison, and coaching reviews.

FAQs

1. What does plus minus rating measure?

It measures the score swing while a player is active. A positive value means the team outscored opponents during those minutes. A negative value means the opposite.

2. Why are possessions or events included?

Raw score swings can be misleading when pace changes. Possessions or event equivalents let the calculator normalize production and defense across faster or slower games.

3. What is team baseline net rating?

It is the expected team net performance outside this player context. Subtracting it helps isolate whether the player is lifting results above normal team standards.

4. What does opponent strength adjustment do?

It rewards players who faced stronger competition. A positive value can lift adjusted impact, while a negative value can reduce it if minutes came against weaker opposition.

5. Why subtract teammate support adjustment?

Strong supporting lineups can inflate player results. Subtracting this factor makes the final rating more conservative and more useful for lineup independent evaluation.

6. Can this calculator work outside basketball?

Yes. Use event equivalents when formal possessions are unavailable. Hockey shifts, soccer attacking sequences, or other repeatable actions can serve as normalization inputs.

7. What is stabilized impact?

Stabilized impact scales adjusted impact by sample reliability. It helps prevent small-minute bursts from looking stronger than larger, more dependable samples.

8. What do CSV and PDF downloads contain?

They export the calculated result table. This makes it easy to share reports, archive game reviews, or compare several player profiles in future analysis sessions.
