Calculate model adequacy effortlessly.
When constructing regression models, checking whether your chosen functional form fits the underlying data appropriately is critical. A lack of fit test evaluates whether a linear or specified nonlinear model adequately captures the structure of the data compared to a fully saturated model containing replicate measurements. By partitioning the residual sum of squares into pure error and lack of fit components, statisticians can determine if model misspecification is present.
The total residual sum of squares ($SS_{res}$) is split into pure error ($SS_{pe}$) and lack of fit ($SS_{lof}$):
$$SS_{res} = SS_{pe} + SS_{lof}$$
The test statistic follows an F-distribution:
$$F = \frac{MS_{lof}}{MS_{pe}} = \frac{SS_{lof} / df_{lof}}{SS_{pe} / df_{pe}}$$
