The margin of error expresses the maximum expected difference between the true population parameter and the sample estimate obtained from survey results or data observations. When working with tabular frequency data, proper estimation relies heavily on sample size, standard deviation, and chosen confidence thresholds.
For estimating the mean of a sample dataset, the margin of error ($MOE$) calculation formula is:
$$MOE = z \times \left(\frac{s}{\sqrt{n}}\right)$$
Where:
For categorical proportion data, the margin of error formula is:
$$MOE = z \times \sqrt{\frac{\hat{p}(1 - \hat{p})}{n}}$$
Generally, a sample size of thirty or more ($n \ge 30$) ensures better approximation accuracy under the central limit theorem, though smaller table blocks can be evaluated using standard deviation formulas.
Higher confidence requirements necessitate a wider interval coverage range, increasing the critical multiplier value and consequently expanding the final margin of error.
