Example Data Table
| Course | Units | Grade | Grade Value | Quality Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| STAT 101 | 3 | A- | 3.7 | 11.10 |
| MATH 199 | 4 | B+ | 3.3 | 13.20 |

| Total | 13 | Mixed | GPA | 40.20 |
Example semester GPA: 40.20 grade points divided by 13 attempted GPA units equals 3.092.
Formula Used
Course quality points = course units × grade point value.
Semester GPA = total semester quality points ÷ total attempted GPA units.
Cumulative GPA = prior grade points plus semester grade points, divided by prior attempted units plus semester attempted units.
Future average needed = ((target GPA × total units after future study) − current cumulative grade points) ÷ future planned units.

About the SF State GPA Calculator
This calculator helps students estimate semester and cumulative grade point averages before records are finalized. It uses course units, letter grades, and optional prior totals. The result is a planning estimate. It does not replace an official transcript. It supports routine advising, repeat planning, probation review, scholarship checks, and personal progress tracking.
Why GPA Planning Matters
A GPA is more than one number. It shows how grades and units work together. A four unit course affects the average more than a one unit course. A low grade in a large course can move the result quickly. This tool makes that effect visible before decisions become final.
Advanced Options Included
You can enter many courses, custom names, units, categories, and official letter grades. You can include prior attempted units and prior grade points. That makes the cumulative section useful for students who already have completed coursework. The target planner estimates the average needed over future units. This helps students compare realistic recovery paths.
Interpreting the Results
The semester GPA uses only current rows with GPA carrying grades. Non GPA symbols are shown, but they are not added to attempted graded units. The cumulative GPA adds prior totals to the current term totals. Always compare the estimate with your adviser, program rules, and official student record.
Practical Study Use
Students can test different grade scenarios during registration or final exam weeks. Replace expected grades with possible outcomes. Then review how each course changes the total. This can guide study priority, withdrawal discussions, repeat choices, and unit load planning.
Record Keeping
The export buttons create simple files for later review. The CSV file works well with spreadsheets. The PDF file gives a compact summary. Keep these records with advising notes. Update the values whenever grades, units, or course plans change.
Accuracy Notes
The calculator follows the entered data exactly. Wrong units or symbols will change the answer. Repeated courses, transfer courses, academic renewal, and special program policies may change official calculations. Use the repeat checkbox only for planning. Ask the registrar or adviser before using an estimate for graduation, aid, eligibility, or appeal decisions. Save each scenario with a clear term name during later adviser meetings too.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does this calculator estimate?
It estimates semester GPA, cumulative GPA, grade points, attempted units, category GPA, and future average needs from the values entered in the form.
Does this replace an official transcript?
No. It is only a planning tool. Official records can include special policies, repeat rules, transfer evaluations, and registrar adjustments.
Which grades affect the GPA?
The calculator includes A through F, IC, and WU as GPA carrying entries. Other listed symbols are treated as non-GPA rows.
How are quality points calculated?
Each included course multiplies units by the selected grade point value. The calculator then adds those quality points across all included courses.
Can I calculate cumulative GPA?
Yes. Enter prior attempted GPA units and prior GPA. You may also enter exact prior grade points when you know them.
What does the benchmark field do?
It compares the estimated cumulative GPA with your chosen benchmark. It is flexible, so undergraduate, graduate, scholarship, or personal goals can be checked.
Why use the include checkbox?
Use it to test scenarios. You can remove a planned course from the calculation without deleting the row data.
What do the export buttons save?
The CSV button saves spreadsheet data. The PDF button saves a compact report with summary values and course details.
