Advanced Mileage Calculator

Formula Used

Total flight miles = one way distance × trip factor × identical itineraries.

Qualifying distance = total flight miles × fare class multiplier.

Fare based award miles = eligible spend × award miles per dollar.

Distance based award miles = qualifying distance.

Total award miles = base award miles × (1 + total bonus rate).

Cost per flown mile = total cash cost ÷ total flight miles × 100.

Reward value = estimated award miles × mile value in cents ÷ 100.

Standard deviation studies how far segment miles spread from the average segment.

How to Use This Calculator

Enter the origin and destination codes first. Add the one way route distance. Choose miles or kilometers. Select one way or round trip. Enter the fare, taxes, and extra travel costs.

Choose fare based earning when you want miles from eligible spend. Choose distance based earning when your estimate depends on flown distance. Add cabin, elite, card, and promotion bonuses as percentages.

Use the segment box when your route has different legs. Separate each segment with commas. Submit the form. The result appears below the header and above the calculator. Use the export buttons to save the report.

Example Data Table

United Flight Mileage Planning

Mileage planning works best when numbers stay transparent. This calculator turns route distance, fare spend, cabin bonuses, and trip counts into a practical travel estimate. It helps flyers compare cash cost, earned miles, qualifying progress, and reward value in one place.

Why mileage estimates matter

United trips can involve many inputs. A traveler may know the route distance but not the effective cost per mile. Another traveler may focus on award miles, bonus percentages, or progress toward a redemption goal. A structured calculator reduces guesswork. It also keeps assumptions visible. You can change one value and see the effect at once.

The tool uses distance, fare, and custom earning rates. It does not claim official account credit. Airline programs can vary by ticket type, partner, promotion, and member status. Treat the result as a planning model. Check your account rules before booking.

Statistics behind the trip

The statistics section studies segment distance. You can enter each segment separately, or let the calculator divide total mileage evenly. It reports average segment length, median segment length, range, variance, and standard deviation. These values help show how spread out the itinerary is.

A simple nonstop route has a small spread. A connecting journey may have short and long legs. That changes comfort, time planning, and mileage patterns. Standard deviation is useful when segment distances differ widely. The higher the value, the less balanced the trip becomes.

Practical uses

Use this page before comparing fare options. Enter the route miles and estimated fare. Add taxes, seat charges, and bags. Then set earning mode, bonus rates, and point value. The result shows cost per mile, estimated reward value, and effective rebate.

You can also test premium cabin bonuses. Change the cabin multiplier, then compare the new reward value against the higher fare. This creates a fairer comparison than fare alone.

The CSV export helps spreadsheet review. The PDF export creates a simple trip report. Both are useful for saving assumptions, sharing plans, or comparing several possible routes. Update the numbers whenever the fare changes. Small fare changes can shift value quickly.

For best results, keep every assumption realistic. Save each scenario before changing fares, bonuses, or segment inputs for review later.

FAQs

Is this an official United mileage tool?

No. It is a planning calculator. It uses your entered assumptions to estimate miles, value, and statistics. Always check your airline account, fare rules, and ticket details before relying on final mileage credit.

Which earning mode should I use?

Use fare based mode when miles depend on eligible spend. Use distance based mode when you want a flown mile estimate. The calculator supports both methods so you can compare different ticket assumptions.

What is eligible earning spend?

Eligible earning spend is the fare amount you want to use for award mile calculations. It may differ from total cash cost because taxes, fees, and extras may not always earn miles.

How are bonus miles calculated?

The calculator adds cabin, elite, promotion, and card bonus percentages together. It then multiplies the base award miles by one plus that combined bonus rate.

Can I enter connecting flights?

Yes. Add each segment distance in the segment box. Separate values with commas, spaces, semicolons, or bars. When segment distances are entered, they replace the one way route distance.

What does standard deviation mean here?

Standard deviation shows how different the segment distances are from the average segment. A higher value means the itinerary has a wider mix of short and long legs.

What is cost per flown mile?

Cost per flown mile divides total cash cost by total flight miles. The result is shown in cents. It helps compare routes, cabins, and fare options more fairly.

What do the CSV and PDF buttons export?

They export the visible result metrics after calculation. CSV is useful for spreadsheets. PDF is useful for saving or sharing a simple trip summary.
