Formula Used

1) Net Goods Value
Net Goods Value = Declared Goods Value − Commercial Discount
2) Customs Value
CIF mode: Customs Value = (Net Goods + Shipping + Insurance + Other Importable Charges) × Exchange Rate
FOB mode: Customs Value = Net Goods × Exchange Rate
3) Duty
Duty = Customs Value × Duty Rate
4) Excise
Excise = Selected Excise Base × Excise Rate
5) VAT / Sales Tax
VAT = Selected VAT Base × VAT Rate
6) Other Tax
Other Tax = (Customs Value + Duty + Excise + VAT + Fixed Fees) × Other Tax Rate
7) Total Payable and Landed Cost
Total Payable = Duty + Excise + VAT + Other Tax + Fixed Fees
Landed Cost = Customs Value + Total Payable

Choose bases that match your jurisdiction or broker guidance. Some countries tax shipping, fees, and excise differently.

Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the difference between customs value and landed cost?

Customs value is the taxable base used to compute duty and related taxes. Landed cost includes customs value plus duty, taxes, brokerage, and handling fees.

2) Should shipping and insurance be included?

Often yes under CIF-style valuation. Some authorities assess duty on goods plus freight and insurance. This calculator lets you switch between CIF and FOB-style treatment.

3) Why does exchange rate matter so much?

Duty is usually assessed in local currency. A higher exchange rate increases customs value, which can raise duty, VAT, excise, and your total landed cost.

4) Can duty be zero while VAT still applies?

Yes. A product may qualify for zero duty due to trade policy or tariff treatment, while VAT or sales tax still applies on the selected taxable base.

5) What if excise tax does not apply?

Enter 0 for the excise rate. The calculator will remove excise from totals, while still calculating duty, VAT, other taxes, and fixed fees normally.

6) Are broker and port fees always taxed?

Not always. Some jurisdictions include certain fees in the VAT base, while others do not. Use the VAT base selector to model the closest local rule.

7) Does this replace broker or customs advice?

No. It is a planning tool for estimating import costs. Final liability depends on classification, valuation, exemptions, anti-dumping rules, and customs decisions.

8) Why is per-unit landed cost important?

Per-unit landed cost supports pricing, margin checks, quotations, and reorder decisions. It helps you compare suppliers and shipping options on a true delivered-cost basis.
