Example Data Table

Inclusive Unit Price Quantity Extra Charges Discount VAT Rate Adjusted Gross Total Exclusive Total VAT Amount Exclusive Unit Price
$120.00 5 $25.00 $10.00 20% $615.00 $512.50 $102.50 $102.50

Formula Used

1. Gross Before Adjustments = Inclusive Unit Price × Quantity

2. Adjusted Gross Total = Gross Before Adjustments + Extra Charges − Discount

3. Exclusive Total = Adjusted Gross Total ÷ (1 + VAT Rate ÷ 100)

4. VAT Amount = Adjusted Gross Total − Exclusive Total

5. Exclusive Unit Price = Exclusive Total ÷ Quantity

6. VAT Per Unit = VAT Amount ÷ Quantity

This setup assumes the entered selling price, charges, and discounts already include VAT. The calculator removes VAT from the adjusted gross figure.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What does VAT exclusive price mean?

It is the price before VAT is added. This calculator starts with a VAT-inclusive figure and removes the tax portion to reveal the underlying pre-tax amount.

2. Can I use this for invoice checking?

Yes. It helps verify whether a tax-inclusive line item correctly converts into its net amount and VAT amount, especially when quantities and extra charges are involved.

3. Should discounts be entered before or after VAT?

In this calculator, discounts are treated as VAT-inclusive values. That means the discount reduces the gross total first, and VAT is then backed out from the adjusted amount.

4. What are extra charges used for?

Use extra charges for shipping, handling, or service fees when those values already include VAT. They are added to the gross total before exclusive price extraction.

5. Why do rounding options matter?

Different businesses round tax figures differently. Choosing nearest, up, or down helps match invoices, accounting rules, or internal reporting preferences more closely.

6. Can I enter zero VAT?

Yes. With a 0% VAT rate, the exclusive total equals the adjusted gross total, and the VAT amount becomes zero.

7. Does the calculator work for bulk quantities?

Yes. Quantity scales the inclusive unit price into a line total, then the tool removes VAT from the adjusted gross figure and reports per-unit values too.

8. What does tax share of gross show?

It shows how much of the final gross amount is tax. This percentage is useful for comparing pricing structures across different VAT rates or discount scenarios.
