Formula Used

Annual distance = Monthly distance × 12

Annual fuel liters = Annual distance ÷ Fuel efficiency

Annual fuel cost = Annual fuel liters × Fuel price per liter

Annual tyre cost = (Annual distance ÷ Tyre life) × Tyre set cost

Annual fixed costs = Maintenance + Insurance + Tax + Parking/Tolls + Finance + Depreciation + Miscellaneous

Annual variable costs = Fuel cost + Tyre cost

Total annual cost = Annual fixed costs + Annual variable costs

Monthly cost = Total annual cost ÷ 12

Cost per km = Total annual cost ÷ Annual distance

Cost per mile = Cost per km × 1.609344

Average trip cost = Cost per km × Average trip distance

FAQs

1. What does this car running cost calculator include?

It includes fuel, tyre wear, maintenance, insurance, tax, parking, tolls, finance, depreciation, and miscellaneous yearly expenses. That gives a more realistic ownership estimate than fuel-only calculations.

2. Why is depreciation included?

Depreciation reflects how much value your car loses over time. Even if it is not a cash payment today, it still affects the real yearly cost of owning and using the vehicle.

3. What is cost per kilometer used for?

Cost per kilometer helps compare vehicles, routes, and travel habits. It is especially useful for trip budgeting, reimbursement estimates, delivery pricing, and deciding between car use and public transport.

4. Can I use this for electric or hybrid vehicles?

Yes, but replace fuel cost inputs with an energy-equivalent approach. For electric vehicles, you can adapt the fuel section using charging cost and consumption converted into comparable annual energy spending.

5. Why are tyre costs separated from maintenance?

Tyres wear according to distance travelled, while maintenance often follows service intervals, age, or planned repairs. Separating them improves cost accuracy for high-mileage and low-mileage drivers.

6. Should parking and tolls be counted as running costs?

Yes. They are recurring usage-related costs for many drivers. Including them gives a fuller picture of total ownership and travel spending, especially in cities and highway-heavy commutes.

7. How often should I update the numbers?

Update the figures whenever fuel prices, insurance, tax, mileage, or maintenance patterns change. Reviewing them every few months keeps your budget and per-kilometer estimate realistic.

8. Is annual or monthly cost more useful?

Both matter. Annual cost is better for ownership planning, while monthly cost is easier for budgeting and affordability checks. Using both together gives the clearest financial picture.
