Trapezoidal uses a per-side H:V slope ratio.
Centerline trench length.
Clear excavation width at base.
From finished grade to trench bottom.
Example: 0.5 means 0.5H:1V on each side.

Materials and Adjustments

Adds clearance on both sides for bedding width.

Loose required = compacted ÷ (factor/100).

Used as displacement inside the trench.
Set to zero if not applicable.
Prismatic volume, thickness × width × length.
Use with thickness to include encasement volume.

Formula Used

Cross-sectional area
  • Rectangular: A = B × Deff
  • Trapezoidal: Top width T = B + 2 × s × Deff
  • Trapezoidal: A = (B + T) ÷ 2 × Deff
  • U-shaped: A ≈ (B × (Deff − r)) + (πr² ÷ 2), r = B/2
Volumes and factors
  • Excavation: Vexc = A × L × n
  • Bedding: Vbed = (B + 2c) × t × L × n
  • Duct displacement: Vduct = (π(OD/2)²) × L × count
  • Backfill (compacted): Vbf = Vexc − Vbed − Venc − Vduct
  • Loose spoil: Vloose = Vexc × (1 + swell%)
  • Loose backfill needed: Vbf,loose = Vbf ÷ (compaction%/100)
  • Waste applied: Vfinal = V × (1 + waste%/100)
Deff includes over-excavation. s is the per-side horizontal-to-vertical slope ratio. The calculator converts everything to meters internally.

  3. For trapezoidal trenches, set the side slope ratio (H:V per side).
  4. Add bedding thickness and clearance if bedding is used on site.
  5. Enter swell, compaction, and waste values that match your method statement.
  6. Optionally include ducts and encasement to refine backfill quantities.
