Example Data

Sample scenarios to validate inputs and expected outputs.

Scenario Length Type Gates Panels/Pickets Posts Concrete bags Materials ($) Total ($)
Backyard privacy 120 ft Panels 1 15 panels 18 24 2,350.00 4,100.00
Side yard pickets 80 ft Pickets 0 176 pickets 11 14 1,120.00 2,050.00
Corner lot mix 200 ft Panels 2 23 panels 30 40 3,980.00 7,240.00
Formula used
  • Usable length = total length − (gate count × gate width).
  • Panels = ceil(usable length ÷ panel width).
  • Posts (panel) = panels + 1 + corner/end posts + (gates × 2).
  • Rails (panel) = panels × rails per panel.
  • Posts (picket) = floor(usable length ÷ post spacing) + 1 + corner/end posts + (gates × 2).
  • Pickets = ceil((usable length × 12) ÷ (picket width + gap)).
  • Rails (picket) = (posts − 1) × rails per bay.
  • Concrete volume/post = π × (hole diameter/24)2 × hole depth. (All dimensions in feet.)
  • Concrete bags = ceil((posts × volume/post) ÷ bag yield).
  • Materials cost = Σ(item count × unit cost) × (1 + misc%/100) × region factor.
  • Labor hours = (usable length ÷ productivity) + (gate count × extra gate hours).
  • Labor cost = (labor hours × crew rate + mobilization) × region factor.
  • Tax = materials cost × (tax%/100). (Tax on materials only.)
  • Total = materials cost + labor cost + tax.
  • Cost/ft = total ÷ total length.
Common panel sizes and coverage

Quick reference for popular sections. Posts assume straight runs without extra corners.

Panel height Panel width Coverage per panel Panels per 100 ft Posts per 100 ft
6 ft 8 ft 8 ft 13 14
8 ft 8 ft 8 ft 13 14
4 ft 8 ft 8 ft 13 14
6 ft (alt) 6 ft 6 ft 17 18
Corner and gate posts add to totals. Apply wastage as needed.
Concrete bags per post lookup

Calculated from cylindrical holes. Yields: 50 lb=0.375 ft³, 60 lb=0.45 ft³, 80 lb=0.60 ft³.

Hole Ø (in) Depth (in) Volume (ft³) 50 lb bags 60 lb bags 80 lb bags
Always verify soil conditions and local requirements; increase for loose soils.
Fence type cost benchmarks

Indicative ranges only. Pricing varies by region, season, and specification.

Fence type Materials ($/ft) Installed ($/ft) Notes
Wood panels (privacy) $12–$25 $25–$55 Includes posts, rails, panels; stain/paint extra.
Wood pickets (site-built) $10–$22 $28–$60 More labor; flexible spacing and styles.
Vinyl panels $24–$40 $45–$85 Low maintenance; higher material cost.
Chain-link (4 ft) $8–$15 $15–$30 Posts set in concrete; fabric and fittings included.
Use the inputs above to tailor estimates to your project specifics.
