Example Data Table

This example shows how weighted components can build a projected final course mark.

Component Earned Maximum Component % Weight % Weighted Contribution
Assignments 84 100 84.00% 20% 16.80
Quizzes 18 20 90.00% 10% 9.00
Midterm Exam 72 100 72.00% 20% 14.40
Project 46 50 92.00% 15% 13.80
Participation 9 10 90.00% 5% 4.50
Final Exam 78 100 78.00% 30% 23.40
Total Final Mark 81.90%

Formula Used

Component Percentage = (Earned Marks ÷ Maximum Marks) × 100

Weighted Contribution = Component Percentage × (Weight Percentage ÷ 100)

Raw Weighted Score = Sum of all weighted contributions

Adjusted Final Mark = Raw Weighted Score + Extra Credit + Curve Points

Normalized Entered Score = (Raw Weighted Score ÷ Total Entered Weight) × 100

Required Final Exam Score = ((Target Overall − Extra Credit − Curve Points − Nonfinal Contribution) ÷ Final Exam Weight) × 100

For the clearest final course estimate, keep total entered weight equal to 100%.

Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does this final marks calculator do?

It converts each assessment into a percentage, multiplies it by its course weight, then adds the weighted contributions to estimate your overall course mark.

2) Do my weights need to total 100%?

Yes for a true final course mark. If they do not, the calculator still shows normalized performance and warns that your course coverage is incomplete.

3) What is the normalized entered score?

It shows performance across only the components you entered. This is useful when some course parts remain ungraded or unannounced.

4) Can I include bonus marks or curve adjustments?

Yes. Extra credit and curve points are added after weighted contributions, helping you model moderation rules, bonus tasks, or instructor adjustments.

5) How is the required final exam score calculated?

The calculator subtracts all nonfinal contributions from your target overall mark, then solves the remaining percentage needed from the final exam weight.

6) Why does the calculator say my target is impossible?

If the required final exam percentage exceeds 100, your target cannot be reached with the current weights, scores, and adjustment settings.

7) Can I change the letter grade boundaries?

Yes. Enter your own A, B, C, and D cutoffs to match your school policy, and the calculator assigns the letter grade automatically.

8) What if one assessment has not happened yet?

Leave earned marks at zero, keep its weight, and use the target section to estimate what score you may need later.
