    Formula used
    • Component percentage: pi = (scorei / maxi) × 100
    • Weighted mode: Overall = (Σ wi·pi) / (Σ wi), weights in percent.
    • Points mode: Overall = (Σ scorei / Σ maxi) × 100
    • Unweighted mode: Mean of pi across included components.
    • Dropping N lowest: remove N smallest pi before computing.
    • Target (weighted): With remaining weight Wr: required average x = [T(Σw + Wr) − Σ(w·p)]/Wr.
    How to use this calculator
    1. Choose your mode: weighted, points-based, or unweighted.
    2. Add rows. Enter Score, Max, and, if weighted, Weight %.
    3. Optional: assign Category labels to enable per-category subtotals.
    4. Use Drop lowest N to ignore weakest components.
    5. Set a Target overall %; remaining weight auto-calculates from unused weights.
    6. Open Grade scale to customize letter thresholds and 4.0 mapping.
    7. Pick a Course or create one, then define its Grade bands.
    8. Click Copy link to save/share the state via URL.
    9. Export items with Download CSV or print a clean PDF report.
What is an overall grade average?

The overall grade average summarizes performance across course components as a single percentage. Depending on the syllabus, you may compute it as a weighted mean of component percentages, a pure points ratio, or an unweighted mean.

    • Weighted: use component percentages pi with weights wi (in %). Result = Σ(w·p)/Σw.
    • Points: sum raw points earned and possible, then divide to get a course-wide percentage.
    • Unweighted: treat each component’s percentage equally regardless of max points or weight.
Weighted vs points: quick worked example
    ComponentScoreMaxWeight %pi
    Homework1802003090%
    Midterm781002078%
    Quizzes851002085%
    Final0100300%
    • Weighted: (30·90 + 20·78 + 20·85 + 30·0) / (30+20+20+30) = 50.6%.
    • Points: (180+78+85+0) / (200+100+100+100) × 100 = 57.6%.
    • Unweighted: (90 + 78 + 85 + 0)/4 = 63.25%.

Different choices can produce different results—match the mode to the syllabus.
