Formula used
This calculator uses a link budget to find the maximum allowable free-space path loss, then solves for distance.
- Lmax (dB) = TxPower + TxGain + RxGain − (CableLoss + FoliageLoss + ObstacleLoss + ExtraLoss) − FadeMargin − RxSensitivity
- FSPL (dB) = 32.44 + 20·log10(dkm) + 20·log10(fMHz)
- Distance: dkm = 10^((Lmax − 32.44 − 20·log10(fMHz))/20)
- Practical range: dpractical = d · EnvironmentFactor
How to use this calculator
- Select your region, then apply the suggested frequency.
- Pick an environment profile, then apply its garden losses.
- Adjust foliage and obstacle losses for your exact layout.
- Set fade margin higher for reliability and fewer retries.
- Click calculate, then export CSV or PDF for records.
Example data table
Sample garden scenarios for quick comparison.
Values are illustrative and vary by hardware.
| Scenario | Frequency (MHz) | Foliage loss (dB) | Obstacle loss (dB) | Fade margin (dB) | Environment factor |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Open beds, clear view | 868.42 | 3 | 2 | 10 | 0.85 |
| Mixed beds and shrubs | 868.42 | 6 | 4 | 12 | 0.70 |
| Dense hedges and trees | 908.42 | 10 | 5 | 14 | 0.55 |
| Near shed and brick wall | 868.42 | 5 | 8 | 15 | 0.50 |
Practical note: Place repeating nodes higher than foliage, and away from metal.
