Formula Used
Mixed numbers are first converted into improper fractions before any arithmetic operation is performed.
Mixed to improper fraction: ((whole × denominator) + numerator) / denominator
Addition and subtraction: (a/b) ± (c/d) = (ad ± bc) / bd
Multiplication: (a/b) × (c/d) = ac / bd
Division: (a/b) ÷ (c/d) = ad / bc
After calculation, the fraction is simplified by dividing the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor.
How to Use This Calculator
- Enter the whole number, numerator, and denominator for the first mixed number.
- Select addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division from the operation list.
- Enter the second mixed number in the same three-part format.
- Click the calculate button to place the result above the form.
- Review the simplified fraction, mixed number, decimal value, and steps.
- Use the CSV or PDF buttons to save the current result.

FAQs
1. What is a mixed number?
A mixed number combines a whole number and a proper fraction, such as 3 1/2. It represents values greater than one in a compact form.
2. Why convert mixed numbers to improper fractions first?
Improper fractions make arithmetic easier. Once both values share fraction form, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division follow standard fraction rules.
3. Can I enter negative mixed numbers?
Yes. Enter the negative sign in the whole number field. Keep the numerator positive so the calculator can interpret the mixed number correctly.
4. Does the calculator simplify the answer automatically?
Yes. Every result is reduced to lowest terms using the greatest common divisor, then converted into mixed number form when possible.
5. What happens if I divide by zero?
The calculator blocks the operation and shows an error. Division by zero is undefined, so no valid mixed number result exists.
6. Why does the result also show a decimal?
The decimal helps with quick comparisons, estimates, and classroom checking. It is useful when you want both exact and approximate values.
7. What do the CSV and PDF buttons save?
They save the visible result summary, including the expression, simplified fraction, mixed number, and decimal form for sharing or revision.
