Trauma Severity Score Calculator

Measure symptom intensity, daily disruption, and resilience factors. See weighted scores, category flags, and trends. Use supportive insights for better reflection and follow-up planning.

This self-check is educational and not a diagnosis. If you feel unsafe, overwhelmed, or unable to function, contact local emergency services or a licensed crisis resource immediately.

Calculator

Rate each item from 0 to 4. Higher values mean greater difficulty, except support, where higher values reflect stronger protection.

Formula Used

Final Score = (Symptom Weighted Average × 0.75 + Context Weighted Average × 0.25) × 25

Symptom Weighted Average = Intrusion × 0.14 + Avoidance × 0.12 + Mood × 0.14 + Arousal × 0.14 + Sleep × 0.10 + Dissociation × 0.14 + Impairment × 0.22

Context Weighted Average = Exposure × 0.20 + Duration Normalized × 0.10 + (4 − Support) × 0.15 + Safety × 0.20 + Work/School × 0.20 + Physical Stress × 0.15

Duration Normalized = minimum(Duration Weeks ÷ 3, 4)

Resilience Buffer Score = ((Support × 0.70 + (4 − Safety) × 0.15 + (4 − Work/School) × 0.15) ÷ 4) × 100

This weighting model helps organize self-reported patterns. It is not a clinical instrument and should never replace a qualified mental health evaluation.

FAQs

1. What does this score measure?

It summarizes self-reported symptom intensity, daily impairment, exposure load, and protective support. The result helps structure reflection, not replace an assessment from a licensed clinician.

2. Is this a diagnosis?

No. It is an educational self-check. Trauma-related symptoms can overlap with anxiety, depression, grief, burnout, and medical issues, so only a qualified professional can diagnose conditions.

3. How often should I retake it?

Weekly or after meaningful changes is enough for most people. Retaking it too often can amplify worry instead of showing progress. Use consistent rating habits for better comparisons.

4. Why does support lower the burden score?

Protective support can buffer distress and improve coping. This calculator lowers the context burden when reliable personal, clinical, or community support is stronger.

5. What if symptoms are intense but recent?

High intensity can still matter even when symptoms are new. Persistent or worsening distress, safety concerns, or rapid functional decline deserves timely professional attention.

6. Can I use this during therapy?

Yes, as a conversation aid. Bring the score, flagged domains, and notes to therapy or coaching sessions so patterns become easier to discuss.

7. What score suggests urgent support?

Higher bands suggest greater disruption and fewer protective buffers. A score above 75, major safety concerns, or inability to function normally should prompt immediate support seeking.

8. How accurate is self-reporting?

Self-rating can miss minimization, shame, or momentary mood shifts. Honest scoring, repeated use over time, and professional interpretation improve usefulness.
