Tip: keep units consistent when comparing materials.
Formula Used

Latent heat problems use the phase-change energy relation: Q = m × L.

  • Q is the heat energy required (J).
  • m is the mass undergoing the phase change (kg).
  • L is the specific latent heat (J/kg).

For the same substance, L differs for fusion, vaporization, and sublimation. Values depend on pressure and temperature.

How to Use This Calculator
  1. Select what you want to solve: Q, m, or L.
  2. Pick a preset substance, or enter your own latent heat value.
  3. Enter the known quantities and choose their units.
  4. Select output units for reporting and comparison.
  5. Press Calculate to view results above the form.
  6. Use the CSV/PDF buttons to export the computed values.
Example Data Table
Case Substance Phase Change Mass (kg) Latent Heat (kJ/kg) Energy Q (kJ)
1 Water Fusion 2.0 333.55 667.10
2 Water Vaporization 1.5 2257 3385.50
3 Aluminum Fusion 0.75 397 297.75
These values are typical, not universal constants.
Notes and Practical Tips
  • Latent heat applies during phase change at nearly constant temperature.
  • If temperature changes too, include sensible heat separately.
  • For mixtures, compute each component’s phase-change energy.
  • Use consistent reference conditions when comparing datasets.
