Design smooth tempo changes using metric modulation. Choose note values, dots, and tuplet ratios easily. See the new BPM instantly and save results fast.
| Old tempo | Equivalence | New beat unit | New tempo (approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quarter = 120 BPM | Eighth tuplet (3:2) = Quarter | Quarter | 80 BPM |
| Quarter = 96 BPM | Dotted eighth = Quarter | Quarter | 144 BPM |
| Dotted quarter = 72 BPM | Quarter = Dotted quarter | Quarter | 72 BPM |
A metric modulation sets one rhythmic duration in the old tempo equal to one rhythmic duration in the new tempo. If N is the equated note value and U is the beat unit used for the BPM, the duration (seconds) is:
Setting old and new durations equal and solving for the new BPM gives:
Dots lengthen notes (1 dot = ×1.5, 2 dots = ×1.75, 3 dots = ×1.875). Tuplets use “a in the time of b”, so each note scales by (b/a).
