Formulas Used
  1. Area:
    Length × Width × Passes (Metric → m², US → ft²). For US, ft² is converted to yd² by ÷ 9.
  2. Residual binder volume:
    Residual = Area × ResidualRate, then apply waste factor: ResidualAdj = Residual × (1 + Waste%/100).
  3. Emulsion (before dilution):
    Emulsion = ResidualAdj ÷ (Residue%/100).
  4. Total spray volume (after dilution):
    Spray = Emulsion × (1 + WaterPart/EmulsionPart).
  5. Packaging counts:
    Count = ceil(Spray ÷ PackageSize) per container size.
Conversions: 1 gal = 3.785411784 L; 1 m² = 1.19599005 yd²; 1 yd² = 0.83612736 m².
How to Use
  1. Pick Single or Batch mode as needed.
  2. For Single, fill inputs; for Batch, add rows with overrides.
  3. Choose a surface preset, or enter a custom application rate.
  4. Optionally select a brand product to set residue and dilution.
  5. Pick a supplier to load package sizes for count rounding.
  6. Use Day plan… to allocate loads, optimize packages, and time tasks.

Tip: Presets are starting points. Confirm rates with local specifications and supplier data.

FAQs

It is the amount of asphalt binder remaining on the surface after the emulsion’s water has evaporated. This is the controlling rate used to estimate true binder demand.

Dilution adds water to achieve better coverage and break. The residual binder target is unchanged, but the total liquid sprayed increases according to the water:emulsion ratio entered.

Use the certified residue content from your supplier’s product data sheet. Many slow‑set emulsions have residues near 55–65%, but always verify for the actual material delivered.

New dense HMA often uses lower rates; milled or porous textures need higher rates. The presets provided are generic; align with your project specification and field engineer guidance.

The calculator computes total spray volume after dilution and divides by each container size, rounding up so you carry enough product for the planned application.
Notes & Example Rate Guide
Surface condition Typical residual rate (L/m²) Typical residual rate (gal/yd²) Comments
New dense HMA / primed surface 0.20 – 0.30 0.04 – 0.06 Lower demand; smooth texture. Verify with spec and trial.
Fresh milled surface 0.45 – 0.55 0.10 – 0.12 Higher demand due to macrotexture and absorption.
Aged / oxidized or porous 0.30 – 0.45 0.06 – 0.10 May require field adjustment based on coverage.

Guide values are illustrative. Use contract documents and supplier recommendations for final decisions.
