Results

Single basket volume:
Total basket volume:
Net solid rock volume: (applies void ratio)
Estimated rock mass:
Loose volume to order: (uses bulk density)

Tip: If you buy by weight, rely on Estimated rock mass. If you buy by volume, rely on Loose volume to order.

Formula used

Let L, W, H be basket dimensions and N the count. Volume of one basket: V₁ = L × W × H. Total volume: Vtot = N × V₁.

Void ratio as fraction: e = void% / 100. Solid-rock volume: Vsolid = Vtot × (1 − e).

Estimated rock mass (buy by weight): M = Vsolid × ρsolid, where ρsolid is stone solid density.

Loose volume to order (buy by volume): Vloose = M / ρbulk, where ρbulk is bulk density of loose rock.

Overfill / wastage factor: multiply final amounts by (1 + waste% / 100).

How to use this calculator

  1. Select the unit system first.
  2. Pick a stone size preset to auto-set voids, or enter manually.
  3. Optionally choose a supplier profile to set bulk density.
  4. Enter basket dimensions, count, densities, and wastage.
  5. Click Calculate; save to presets for future projects.
  6. Use CSV or PDF to export your results.

FAQs

For 100–200 mm stone, 30–40% is common. Tighter grading or flatter shapes reduce voids; larger, rounded stones increase voids.

Use solid density for the rock type (e.g., granite ~2600 kg/m³). Bulk density is the loose pile density, typically around 1500–1700 kg/m³.

Yes. Add 3–8% for trimming, settlement, and losses. This tool applies your chosen percentage to volumes and masses.

They are linked by density. Mass comes from solid density and voids; loose volume depends on bulk density used by the supplier.

Yes. Switch units at any time. The calculator converts automatically and preserves your numeric values with appropriate unit labels.

Follow basket manufacturer guidance. Common sizes are 100–200 mm or 150–300 mm; larger stones typically create higher void ratios.

Minorly. Mesh and diaphragms occupy a small volume. Your wastage allowance generally covers this along with sorting and trimming losses.
