Metal Studs & Tracks Takeoff Calculator

Calculate studs, tracks, corners, and openings across multiple walls fast with accuracy. Auto-suggest stud lengths from height, spacing, and double top options when needed. Apply splice laps, waste factors, and export totals per material and wall. Clear methods, examples, and FAQs guide every estimate.

Choose multiple to enable mixed-length optimization.
Coverage lost at each splice.
Used to auto-suggest minimum stud length per wall.
Applied to new walls; tracks match stud width/gauge.
Select a brand for SKUs and optional lb/lf overrides.
Exports include weights, bundles, and truck plan.
Gauge → Mil Reference Steel thickness approximations
25 ga ≈ 18 mil (0.018") 22 ga ≈ 30 mil (0.030") 20 ga ≈ 33 mil (0.033") 18 ga ≈ 43 mil (0.043") 16 ga ≈ 54 mil (0.054") 14 ga ≈ 68 mil (0.068")
Mil = thousandths of an inch. Confirm per submittal.

Formulas Used
  1. Studs (basic): floor(Lengthin ÷ Spacingin) + 1.
  2. Removed by openings: Σ floor(OpeningWidthin ÷ Spacingin) per opening.
  3. Kings & Jacks: Kings = Σ per-opening kings; Jacks = Σ per-opening jacks.
  4. Studs per wall: Basic − Removed + Kings + Jacks.
  5. Track coverage: Coverage = Σ pieceLengths − (pieces − 1) × lap.
  6. Optimization target: Meet run ≥ Coverage with minimal waste or minimal pieces.
  7. Waste: Each run length multiplied by (1 + Waste%).
  8. Suggested stud length: Smallest available length ≥ Wall Height.
  9. Weight/lf (geometry fallback): density × thickness × developed length × 12 using brand dims.
  10. Bundles: roundedCount = ceil(count ÷ bundleSize) × bundleSize.
  11. Trucks: first-fit decreasing on rounded weights against payload.
How to Use
  1. Set defaults, track lengths, lap, waste, preset, brand, and toggles.
  2. Add walls; choose presets or keep the project default.
  3. Use the openings editor to list widths and kings/jacks.
  4. Choose optimization goal for mixed track lengths.
  5. Calculate; review counts, weights, bundles, and truck plan.
  6. Export CSV or PDF to include all details for procurement.

FAQs

Each wall segment includes a stud at both ends by default.

Interior studs within the opening width are removed; kings and jacks are added.

Yes. Use the per-opening editor to override per-wall defaults.

It doubles the top track run and required pieces for that wall.

Every splice reduces coverage by the lap amount, increasing required pieces.

Yes. Enter counts and studs per assembly; these increase the overall total.

Waste is applied to track run lengths before optimization.

It selects the smallest available length not less than the wall height.

It searches combinations of selected stock lengths to minimize waste or pieces.

Use the CSV button to download a spreadsheet-friendly file.

Use the PDF button; the tables are captured into a formatted document.

Inputs are in feet and inches; spacing and opening widths are inches.

Choose presets for stud width and gauge; materials group by preset.

This calculator treats each wall independently; adjust counts if sharing occurs.

Kings and jacks are counted; headers and sills are not quantified here.
