Pattern Waste & Edge Complexity (Reference)
Use these starting points; adjust waste for site-specific cuts and breakage.
| Pattern | Default Waste % | Edge Cut Complexity | Typical Border Need | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Running Bond | 5% | Low | Optional | Straight rips; 1/2 or 1/3 running offsets. |
| Herringbone 90° | 10% | High | Recommended | Diagonal edge cuts; frequent triangular offcuts. |
| Herringbone 45° | 12% | High | Recommended | Diagonal miters; most cutting at perimeter. |
| Basketweave | 7% | Medium | Optional | Alternating pairs; some staggering at edges. |
| Stack Bond | 3% | Low | Optional | Aligned joints; minimal cutting required. |

Formulas Used
- Gross Area = Length × Width
- Net Area = Gross Area − Openings Area
- Module Length = Paver Length + Joint, Module Width = Paver Width + Joint
- Module Area = Module Length × Module Width
- Field Area = Inner rectangle after border rows
- Field Pavers = Field Area ÷ Module Area
- Border Pavers (per row) ≈ Perimeter_row ÷ Module Length
- Waste Pavers = Field Pavers × Waste %
- Total Pavers = Field Pavers + Border Pavers
- Base/Sand Volume = Net Area × Depth
- Multi-size mode: Effective Module Area = Σ(shareᵢ × (Lᵢ+J)×(Wᵢ+J))
Border ring width per row equals Module Width. In multi-size mode, the chosen border size defines the ring width.
How to Use
- Select units, then enter project length and width.
- Optionally enter openings to subtract non-paved areas.
- Enter paver size, joint, choose a pattern, and review waste.
- For random multi-size modules, enable the toggle and set shares.
- Add border rows if using a soldier course perimeter.
- Set base and sand depths; click Calculate for totals.
- Export CSV or PDF; use the preview to visualize the layout.
FAQs
Which pattern wastes the most material?
Herringbone patterns typically create more offcuts at edges, so we prefill higher overage by default. You can override the percentage to match site conditions.
Do border rows reduce the field paver count?
Yes. Border rows occupy a ring around the rectangle, and the calculator reduces the inner field area accordingly before computing field pavers.
Are joints included in the paver coverage?
Yes. The calculator treats the joint as part of the repeating module so coverage reflects the laid pattern, not just brick face size.
How accurate are the pallet estimates?
Enter the pavers per pack from your supplier; we round up to full packs to ensure enough material on site.
Can I use mixed sizes or random patterns?
Enable multi-size mode, set shares for each size, and the calculator computes counts by distribution with the same pattern overage.

| Brick 4×8 | 4 × 8 | 100 × 200 | 3/16 in (5 mm) | |
| Classic 6×9 | 6 × 9 | 152 × 229 | 1/4 in (6 mm) | |
| Square 8×8 | 8 × 8 | 203 × 203 | 1/4 in (6 mm) | |
| Metric 100×200 | ≈ 3.94 × 7.87 | 100 × 200 | 5 mm (≈ 3/16 in) |
