Tonnage Calculator

Plan materials confidently using precise tonnage calculations and presets for common materials. Switch between metric and imperial units without losing accuracy on every calculation. Add multiple line items, apply waste, moisture, and compaction factors per item. See totals by short, long, and metric tonnes instantly calculated. Export CSV and PDF for records and quotes.

Formula Used

The calculator converts inputs to volume () or mass (kg) then to tonnes/tons:

Volume mode: mass_dry (kg) = volume (m³) × density (kg/m³)
Area × thickness mode: volume (m³) = area × thickness (units converted)
Mass mode: mass_dry (kg) = entered mass (kg)
Adjustments: mass_adj = mass_dry × (1 + moisture%) × (1 + waste%) × (1 + compaction%)
Conversions: t = kg ÷ 1000, short ton = kg ÷ 907.18474, long ton = kg ÷ 1016.0469088

How to Use This Calculator
  1. Choose your unit system, library, and rounding decimals.
  2. Click Add Line and select an input mode.
  3. Enter quantity or dimensions, pick material preset, or set custom density.
  4. Apply waste, moisture, and compaction as needed.
  5. Use Copy Shareable Link to save or share scenarios.
  6. Import/export CSV or PDF to collaborate and keep records.
Values are estimates. Always confirm densities and factors with your supplier.
FAQs

A metric tonne (t) is 1000 kg. A short ton (US) is 2000 lb (≈907.18 kg). A long ton (UK) is 2240 lb (≈1016.05 kg).

Start with a typical bulk density from the table, then adjust for grading, moisture, and supplier data. Different quarries and moisture states vary widely.

Moisture increases wet mass. Waste accounts for losses during transport or placement. The calculator multiplies both factors, so totals rise accordingly.

Yes. Choose “Area × Thickness”; the tool converts to volume internally, then applies density to compute mass and tonnage.

Suppliers quote proprietary blends, gradations, and moisture contents. Use their stated density and recommended factors for purchase orders.

If you specify compacted thickness, more material may be needed to account for void reduction. The compaction factor models that increase.

Yes. Use CSV/PDF export or create a shareable URL from your current scenario to review with teammates.
