Formula Used

Unweighted GPA = Total quality points / Total graded credits

Quality points = Grade point value x Course credits

Weighted GPA = Sum of (grade point value + course bonus) x credits / Total graded credits

Common bonuses = Honors +0.5, AP/IB +1.0, Dual Enrollment +1.0

Letter grades convert to base points on a 4.0 scale. Courses such as Pass, Withdrawn, or Incomplete are excluded from GPA totals unless your school applies a different policy.

Why This GPA Calculator Helps

This calculator supports weighted and unweighted analysis for realistic academic planning. It handles mixed credit values, course rigor bonuses, optional excluded grades, and target comparison in one place. Students, parents, and counselors can test different scenarios before grades are final.

Because it shows both summary cards and a course-by-course breakdown, it is useful for report preparation, advising meetings, scholarship screening, and semester planning. CSV and PDF export options make the output easier to store or share when discussing academic performance.

FAQs

1. What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?

Unweighted GPA uses the base grade scale only. Weighted GPA adds bonus points for more rigorous classes such as Honors, AP, IB, or dual enrollment.

2. Do all schools use the same GPA scale?

No. Many schools use a 4.0 base scale, but weighting policies and bonus amounts differ. Always compare your result with your school handbook.

3. Are pass or withdrawal grades included?

Usually they are excluded from GPA totals. This calculator treats Pass, Withdrawn, and Incomplete as non-graded entries unless you manually map them differently.

4. Why do credits matter in GPA calculations?

Credits act as weights. A full-credit course affects GPA more than a half-credit course because its quality points contribute more.

5. Can this calculator help with semester planning?

Yes. You can enter projected grades and compare scenarios to estimate how future performance may change your academic standing or target gap.

6. What if my school uses percentage grades?

Convert percentages to your school’s letter-grade equivalent first. Then enter the matching letter grade in the calculator for a consistent result.

7. Is a higher weighted GPA always better for admissions?

Not always by itself. Admissions teams often review course rigor, trends, class rank, test scores, essays, and activities together.

8. Can counselors use this output during advising meetings?

Yes. The breakdown table, target comparison, and export tools make it useful for quick academic reviews and documented planning discussions.
