Inputs
Check to input gallons/L directly. Otherwise enter footprint and water depth.
We use footprint × depth × 0.004329 to get gallons (or cm → liters).
Controls the bioload multiplier.
Fish: 3–5×; Turtles: 5–10× (heavier waste). Adjust as needed.
ft
We derate ~10% per ft (capped at 40%) for pump head losses.
We’ll estimate delivered flow after derates.

Notes
- “Delivered” flow is what your tank feels; “Rated” is the box number. Clogging, head height, and media reduce delivered flow.
- Two filters can increase redundancy and surface skimming in long tanks.
- If turtles are messy eaters, bias toward the high end of the range.
FAQ
Turtles produce heavier solid waste and oily films. Higher turnover (5–10×/h) improves mechanical capture and keeps bio-media oxygenated.
Most ratings are at zero head and empty canisters. Real delivered flow is often 20–40% lower. This tool derates for clogging, head height, and optimistic specs.
Two canisters provide redundancy, better circulation, and staggered cleanings—useful for >75 gal tanks or messy species.
